I saw it on Ebay too, but from the reviews Ive read on CoffeeGeek it doesnt sound fantastic. I reacon if you can get it cheap then that may be a reason to put up with the problems.

    My fave comment was this:
"If youre into static and cleaning coffee from places you never knew existed, the MC2002 is for you!"

Ive got one of these which Ive been using for a couple of years now. As most of the CoffeeGeek reviews say - it can be messy as the lid doesnt totally close on the bin when grinding so you have to hold it down or else ground coffee escapes. Other than that I have no complaints as it was relatively cheap at the time I got it (cant remember exactly but it was < $200 - mates rates). It grinds fine enough for my Silvia on the #1 setting (second lowest).

See here for more detailed comparison with other grinders:

Well - was at work this weekend, and kept an eye on the eBay one - and it was still at $140 so I brought it! So Ill have it at $150 - so screw the static problem - Ill try that antistatic strap idea for sure!

Was looking at the Ibertal - and thats $300, so I just saved $150. Ill put that into saving for the mini mazzer!!!

    Andy,

There are really only 2 items that some individuals find problematic with this grinder. One is that of the "static / mess", the other is that the grinder can easily be blocked up if the user does not keep the outlet channel clean / clear.

The end of the outlet channel is covered by a kind of plastic grate (this is where the grinds come out of the body of the grinder & fall into the clear plastic receptacle "below"). This grate is most probably fitted by the manufacturer as a safety feature to stop someone putting their finger up the hole, particularly while the grinder may be spinning!

If you keep the area of the "plastic grate" clean, then you wont have a collection of old sticky grinds collecting there, blocking up the outlet, & backing up the grinds inside...then it is unlikely there will ever be a problem there.

We just use cheap artist brushes as purchased from the local newsagent to brush & poke the grinds away from the grate after use.

    Well done.

    Regardz,
    FC.

Cheers for that FC - thats a good tip.

I was actually thinking about "modding" the grinder to remove that stoopid grate - I already thought it looked like an unnecessary bit.

The other thing is that in the photo that the guy stuck on ebay it looks to me like its got the PF attachmetn that allows you to grind straight into the PF? Im not sure of this - but looking at the picks definatly looked like there was something on the front of it to do this.... that would be good. But Ive got to assume that the grate is still behind this "shoot" bit.

Mainly Im thinking of ripping off the grate and making a portafilter funnel (by copying the one on there, or designing one myself) made of alloy or SS. Will see - cant be THAT hard surely!!!

Ill let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks again for the tip FC.

    Re: Budget Grinder-Saeco MC2002

    Youre welcome.

Just one thing...if you are going to remove that grate just remember its probably there as a safety feature...I didnt see the ad on ebay so dont know if the grinder is new or used. If its new and therefore subject to warranty, suggest leaving it alone until after the warranty runs out....just in case.

The "coffee doser / dispenser", like the one on the rocky, is not adjustable and in terms of dropping the "correct" dose of grinds, is only good for coffee filters as supplied / used on the manufacturers own machines. This doser unit is now an "option" (used to be supplied as standard in the "old days") that you pay extra for on a new grinder bought through normal retail channels. Either way, if your grinder comes with the doser unit, then it also SHOULD come with the bulk container.....Suggest using the bulk container, and relegating the useless doser unit to collect dust on a shelf in the garage.

    Goodluck,
    FC.

Yeah - its not a doser, but I think its like a spout where you dont have to use the bulk container - just hold the PF underneath it? I may be way off base here, but Ill let you know.... the guy from Ebay kicked arse, and its in the post now, so should arrive before the weekend! Cracking!

Na - its second hand - but "used for about a month" type thing. Looks pretty good. But Ive yet to get it in the post, so I cant tell yet.

Wouldnt want to void the warrenty, but there wont be one - so the skys the limit! Sweet.
