Silvia & Sunbeam EMO480 Best Grind Setting

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Just a querry for those people out there that are using a Silvia with the Sunbeam emo480 grinder; what seems to be your best grind setting??

Purchased one the other day to go with my newly aquired Silvia and just thought I would ask.

    Cheers

Re: Silvia & Sunbeam EMO480 Best Grind Setting

In my understanding, theres so much variation between baristi and grinders and machines that no one setting is likely to be close for all. (The lass at the Sunbeam coffee course said that they had set up these grinders anywhere between 4 and 16 depending on the variables involved...)

So just start in the middle (~10-12) and adjust a click or two at a time as needed...

    Gday George,
When youre following Matts sound advice, just make sure that you keep the other variables the same, ie dosage and tamp, so you can work out the correct grind setting.
When you get very close to the correct grind, remember that theres an approximately 9 second difference between each click on the grinder. Thats the time to fiddle ever so slightly with the dose, or the tamp pressure to reduce or increase the shot time. Only ever change one thing at a time though, or youll end up chasing your tail.
    All the best.

Re: Silvia & Sunbeam EMO480 Best Grind Setting

I am VERY interested to see the outcome of your testing George.G. I have the same combo (Silvia and EM0480) and am unable to grind coffee fine enough to get a good 25-30 second extraction.

I keep my dosage and tamp the same and find myself grinding on the lowest possible setting.. and its still not fine enough.

My dosage is "as much as will possibly fit" and my tamp pressure is "as hard as I possibly can". Then I get a 20-25 second extraction..

I basically have no capability for adjustment whosoever.. :(

Let us know how you go.

    Gday Paul,
have you had your grinder checked out by the service centre, you might have a dodgy grinder.
Coffeemike had a similar problem, and he ended up getting it replaced. Check this link.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Silvia & Sunbeam EMO480 Best Grind Setting

    Paul.

I have had the grinder about a week or so and I too think my results may agree with what Lovey mentioned.

I am actually happy with grind setting number 15!!! at the moment. I just made a coffee before and got about 40-45 mls in about 20 seconds. Used a light to medium tamp on that one. This is a tad fast but a am getting lots of crema and quite thick and dark...so happy with that as you could imagine. I will most likely start comming down a click or two to try and decrease the flow rate, but as i am getting good crema i am not in a hurry to keep mucking around. Perhaps a slightly harder tamp would equal the same result of comming down a grind or two also?.

When I first got the grinder I assumed a good starting point would be setting number 10. I found that this was too fine (could you imagine) and even with a medium tamp, the machine was struggling to produce any thing much other than black syrup type stuff with no crema- there was also coffee grinds in the bottom of the cup on that setting, I made a few at 12 and 13 etc and just stayed on 15 and there I am at the present.

I have also been filling the basket so after tamping the group handle requires some pressure to turn and the coffee appears to hard against the screen..this seems to work best on my Silvia and I dont get any water left on top of the puck after.

I can honestly say that I do not know a lot about grinders etc..but I am happy with the Sunbeam thus far and especially for $165 brand new and could be possible that yours may require an adjustment or clean???

Sounds great George.G. Good to hear you are creating nice coffee. Thanks for the info. I think I may have a bit of a dud. Lining up to drop mine off to Sunbeam service centre (thanks Lovey) tomorrow to see what they have to say.

Will let you know the outcome.

Re: Silvia & Sunbeam EMO480 Best Grind Setting

Well, Ive finally got a new EM0480.. what a relief. Greg from Sunbeam was great to deal with.. he had no hesitation on completely replacing my grinder. Since using the new one, Ive had no complaints.. my grind setting varies now between 12-17 depending on humidity and bean.

Thanks Sunbeam.. the EM0480 really is comparable to the dearer grinders after all..

Hmm, might have to get mine looked into. I run it on 4 or 5 typically. Though at that setting Im getting satisfying results, so theres not a major desire to rush out and do anything.

im the same, running at about 4/5... with the minore.
i was up around 10, but got a new blend, and it dropped down to 4. was expecting it to go back up as the beans aged, but its still at 4.... will wait for a new batch, and see where that one takes me.....

aaahhhh....im running mine on the finest setting and JUST getting a 18-20 second shot with my silvia....
I am so annoyed and couldnt believe the grinder cant go any finer. It still feels coarse....
Do i need to make a trip to Sunbeam?? Or Harvey Normans where i bought it???

you mentioned above that you were "Just getting a 18-20 sec shot". What change has the new one given you?

Re: Silvia & Sunbeam EMO480 Best Grind Setting

Guys..Well my Sunbeam is still going great..sitting or around setting 12 or 13. It was cold here the other day ( Im in Brisbane so it was nearly 8 the other morning!!!) and my Silvia choked at 12 so again mine is still working fine and I guess there must be a couple of duds getting around, but the good thing with such a large company like Sunbeam, itappears to be easy to have them replaced..so thats a bonus!

hmm, ok starting to think I may have a dud here. I have the grind setting on 24 at the moment at it is still almost choking my gaggia classic. the grinds are noticably finer than my pre-ground illy beans.

Re: Silvia & Sunbeam EMO480 Best Grind Setting

    some progress to report :P

right, so I have made my first drinkable shot with my emo480. *how? *turned the adjustment collar past its normal range by holding down the release button :( *only then do I get coarse enough particles to not choke my machine. *so I think something is definately wrong here.

also to note: *when i have the setting down below 15ish the motor slows noticably and sounds like its working to hard. *leads me to think my machine has its burrs too close.

re: my earlier post in the emo480 review thread where it was too coarse.... i now realise i didnt have the top burr seated correctly at all during that grinding session. *had me confused for a while but i now realise i hadnt assembled it properly.

anyway sorry for crapping on... too bad its easter and no service centers will be open :P
