    La Cimbali MD6

    Hi Guys,

    I have just bought a used La Cimbali MD6 grinder and it appears to be in very good condition. It is huge! The trip meter shows 3750 shots and unless it has been round a few times, the burrs could still be in good condition. A couple of questions-

    Is this grinder any good?

    How does one disassemble the unit to check the burrs?

    What size burrs does it use and are they readily available?

    Part 2

    I got the grinder asetting cap off (2 screws) and the whole brass block unscrews with the top burr attached to it by 3 screws. Bottom burr is attached to the carreier with the centre shaft held on by a large nut. It was a bit yucky so I cleaned it, after screwing it back I think I have stuffed the alignment because it is now grinding too coarse.

    I screwed the brass thingy as far as it goes, back it off a bit so that the screw holes line up and set the alignment mark to 0 which to me means Max closeness and then tested on 0,1,2,3 all progresively coarser so I think new burrs are in order unless there is an special alignment procdedure which escapes my very limited knowledge of grinders.
    If someone can explain the coreect procedure it will be great

    All fixed! Took it apart again and instead of trying to align to 0, got it to Max and then adjusted the grind settings. Near Max, too powdery now (instead of coarse) and gradually decreasing till the grind was like fine sand (according to descriptions by CSers). With too powdery a grind, my Gaggia was choking and with different setting of trial and error I am now able to have fairly long pours before blonding.

    That is one heavy duty grinder youve got there MR200 :o,

    Dont think youll wear this one out in a hurry.... Good buy 8-),

    Thanks for reducing the image size. I was finding it a bit large to view too I had a laugh.
    The grinder seems to be working well after fiddling with the adjustments although I think it needs new burrs as they dont feel very sharp. The top burr carrier is brass and screws onto the mounting block, would you know if there are any springs like those on Mazzers....just my paranoia that there may be springs that may be missing from the block

    No worries mate, if you can keep them to a maximum size of 640x480 pixels thatll make it easier for everyone. :)

    The best way to tell really, is to check how much fines (dust) is produced as a proportion of the overall spectrum of the grounds produced for a single/double shot. For example, with my La San Marco grinder, prior to replacing the burr-plates, the fines fraction was approaching 15% coupled with significant size variability overall. After replacing the burr-plates, this fraction reduced to almost zero and always less than 1% (by weight on a jewellers scales), so it really is worth doing.

    Wouldnt have a clue mate, sorry :-?. Maybe a couple of our other La Cimbali owning members could help you out there. Or perhaps try contacting LC or Faema in Italy, have always found the parent companies to be very helpful with snobs like us. All the best mate :),

    Hi Maxrob....

    The burr assembly looks almost the same as my La Cimbali Jnr Grinder....

    In which case there are no springs....

    The genuine La Cimbali burrs will set you back about $140..... if you can stretch your budget that far they are really worth it! The after market ones are a lot cheaper.... but the grind quality isnt as good....

    After testing the grind settings, I found that they are fairly consistent in size. I will keep an eye on it and if they get a bit scraggly then I will have to shell out for new burrs. Should burrs in good condition feel sharp?
    I think they are 64 mm.
    $140 is pretty expensive, I wonder if coffeeparts have got them. On their site I could only see 64 DRM, which from my reading of posts imply that they are flat/conical combo?
    The Cimbali site only has the newer model MD6/S6 with a different hopper and a grinds dish attachment (I use a plate!)
    The problem with such a huge grinder is that I have to use a brush after grinding to sweep the grinds into the dosing wedges and then twack the handle a few times to fill up my PF

    Yup, all grinder retain excess in the chute and the commercials are probably worse.....since, design-wise its a non issue in a cafe environment.

    I have the same problem with my K8 and it was even more annoying because I had to wait about 45 sec before the burrs stopped spinning before I could brush it out into the doser.
    I got around the problem by using the rubber "suction cup thingy" from a plumbers plunger.
    It sits on top of my grinder as a lid [I dont use the hopper] and I just give it bash at the end of the grind and it blasts everything out of the chute.

    Your earlier posts on the LSM, and this one have convinced me to get some new burrs too, I can feel theyre *dull and I see fines within the grind.

    I also notice overall, my pours are lighter in colour [I dont mean blonding per se] but the overall colour throughout the shot is not as dark as I think it should be.

    Im guessing an excess of fines would cause this, since the fines portion would be overextracting and blonding within the shot.....if that makes sense.

    Did you notice a colour change following the burr replacement??? *

    Gday reubster,

    Im still relegated to FP/Plunger coffee at this stage mate (not that theres anything wrong with that ::)) so cant help you out there. The difference in the quality of the brew in the FP was very noticeable though, like chalk and cheese and the resulting brews are very, very clear by comparison..... When viewed in a Latte glass for example, it looks like strong tea rather than an opaque dark brown. The individual coffee flavours are much more discernible too, as though a curtain has been lifted.

    Definitely worth doing in my book. Got my replacement burrs from CoffeeParts and as usual received great service and excellent advice 8-). Go for it mate,

    The toilet plunger seem like a great way to pump excess grinds into the doser. Currently I use the vac to suction up leftover grinds from the throat as well as the doser...very tedious but shots are good! Have ti=o buy some new burrs when I have some spare cash.
