Beans are a bit old at 3 months tommo

    However all grinders produce clumping
Doser models remove the clumps with the sifting action

Doser-less models dispense the grinds as is to the PF

Clumping can also be due to the freshness of the beans and the weather (static)

You can use one of these baby whisks to help fluff the coffee grinds

This one cost me $0.95 cents at a kitchen shop

    Also a tip
As a starting point grind to a consistency of table salt and adjust from there

Double shot dose is 14 grams for standard baskets

good tip about consistency..mines too fine then methinks and Im not able to yet pull the shot correct...

Ive read I should aim for around a 25 second pull. and about 3oz capacity...

I will use these beans as tests subjects..I had a laugh I aint got many left anyway, and the way Im going through test shots at the moment, Im sure they wont last long..I had a laugh

A single shot is 30 ml which is approximately 1oz.
    A double is 60 ml or 2oz.

Are you still using 3 month old beans
It may be your crema problem

yes I am..Ill have another go tomorrow ..Im still enjoying the process...and the machines...someone here told me that the most important part is the beans and grinder..Im starting to see how true that is..

the puck is quite wet on top after the shot..is that normal...after tamping the coffee stays in the basket when I turn it upside down...and the puck comes out as one, with just af few bits left in the basket..

im also having probelms getting the right capacity in the basket...should it be full to the top prior to the tamp.

If the rest of the puck is dry it may be due to you removing the PF to quickly
    Or grind is to fine

I[ch8217]m also having problems getting the right capacity in the basket...should it be full to the top prior to the tamp
At the start go by weight that way you can[ch8217]t go wrong

Also experiment with depth of the puck in the basket as it should just clear the filter screen when the PF is tight (you don[ch8217]t want to crack the puck as the water pressure will make it a gusher)

It will make a huge difference when you finally use fresh beans.
But for now while you are practicing use the old ones up

Yes the importance of a good grinder
I am afraid that piece of information given by CS members is the most neglected
Then it is quickly followed with an upgrade

the puck once knocked out is very compacted, the wetness on top of the puck as I release the PF seeps into the puck very quickly and is gone by the time I knock it out...

Iíve had the basket so full I canít get it of the group head..I had a laugh

this lark is a real learning curve..but I can see why it so addictive...I want perfection...I had a laugh..so Ill keep at it with the advice from you guys 8-)

one other question..if I get 30ml in 25 second with the old beans ,,albeit with a reduced crema...with new fresh beans the capacity of the shot would be the same, but with a better crema ?..or will I have to alter the grind again...and once found, will a grind that works on one bean..work on them all for my machines PF

You will undoubtedly get more and better crema with fresh beans. Unfortunately it is hard to predict the grind for a pour time/volume. The weather, the age of the beans, the beans themselves, the roast level, and the grind level, the quantity ground, and the way you hold your mouth :P, all contribute to a great pour.

Sometimes it seems like gambling--we just keep trying and trying for "another perfect shot". Keep reminding yourself that its all fun, and enjoy the not-quite-perfect-shots in the meantime.

fresh beans have taken my blues away..its incredible what a differance it has made..Im now getting 30 ml shot in 25 seconds with a good crema......also the aroma of the beans of the stale ones is so much different to the new fresh beans..its like chalk and cheese...

its certainly showing the importance of grinder and freah beans..I now feel on on the path ...

one thing I never realised I had though...was hands with all thumbs ...I had a laugh..

now onto trying to get all mircofoam.....the battle continues . ;)
