Please help CSers. Im a newbie on the verge of an EBM or Giotto but dont know whether the Rocky (doserless) is good enough for the excellence of the machines.

Ill be making a handful of coffees a day.

I went from 6 years with Silvia and Rocky, upgraded to a VBM DS and Rocky for about 8 months, and now have nearly a year with VBM DS and Mazer Kony. I do not at all regret selling the Rocky. Yes, it worked but as soon as I stepped up to a high-quality, stepless grinder I noticed the improvement and control. If you have the Rocky already, then it will work for now until you can afford to step up. If not, look elsewhere for a better grinder. And while I would not recommend the Kony to anyone but the highly insane (like myself) I really like the Mazzer offerings for a lot of reasons, but there are plenty of great grinders out there.

    Hi Jeza,

The Rocky is a good little grinder and will do the job.

Id recommend that you go that little bit further if you can afford it and look to a Compak K3T. Its doserless but has a stepless adjustment of grind which can be beneficial. Many CSers look to Compak, Macap and Mazzer with this level of machine.

We can also do a package deal on either of your chosen machines with a Rocky or something better.

Good luck with your shopping. You will love the new kit ;)

Is Compak K3T that much better then a Rocky or should you just bite the bullet and get a Mazzer?

If your budget can stretch that far, I would recommend getting the Mazzer, if it is the best grinder you can buy. It will feel right at home next to the Minore or Giotto. The Compak K3 is an excellent grinder too. I use the a Rocky doserless for plunger, syphon and cuppings.

i agree with everyone above but one more suggestion may be to do the stepless mod for your rocky and see how that works for you, while you save for that robur...

Re: Is the Rocky OK with the Minore III or Rocket Giotto?

The idea that you need a better grinder than the rocky to pair with a prosumer machine doesnt tell the whole story.

If you upgrade from a sub-$1000 espresso machine and keep the Rocky, you will probably notice an improvement in the quality of your espresso and the consistency with which you are able to achieve it. This is because the prosumer machines are easier to use than the entry level domestic machines. That might seem counter-intuitive at first glance, but when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. You pay more money for ease of use and increased quality. This means that if you are fairly happy with your espresso now, it may not be worthwhile upgrading your rocky.

If you think about it, the worse the machine, the better the grinder that you should have in order to make up for the machine. So it is within the realm of possibility that you might actually feel that the Rocky is not good enough for your sub-$1000 machine, but is good enough for a prosumer machine.

I think that there are two reasons why people buy more expensive grinders to pair with more expensive machines. The first is for the improvement in espresso quality and the ease with which it can be obtained. The second is because the people who have money to spend on more expensive machines are also more likely to have money to spend on more expensive grinders.

So if you have read all of that, you probably think that my opinion is that you should keep the Rocky. Its not - personally, Id want at least a compak k3 touch. But I would want at least that even if it were paired with a sub-$1000 machine.

    Cheers,

    Luca

    Agree!

I havent used a Rocky for a better machine than a Silvia yet. I have got a La Cimbali Junior grinder though. While it ainít a Mazzer it still is "better" than a Rocky. Bigger motor, bigger burr plates and top carriage is much tighter.

Probably the biggest difference is the very, very small stepping on the Junior. This has really helped in getting better, more consistent shots from my Silvia. Even after modifying my Rocky was the stepless/teflon mods I would get a bad shot one in three.
Now, with the Junior, I probably get a bad shot one in ten.

Actually it was a lot easier to dial in. Before the stepless mod the shot would run too fast on one setting and too slow on the next step finer.
Stepless sort of fixed that. Still hard to get it spot on.

The Junior is much, much easer again. Just move that dial on the front. I think the numbers go from 0 - 40 (Im at work now) and (again I think) one turn of the dial moves a quarter step. You can get a really, really fine adjustment out of it.
The problem with the Junior is that it a real pain to switch from espresso grind to plunger/cold press. That is what I use my Rocky for now.

Thanx for all the comments above.

I want to throw another grinder into the mix....the ECA KS grinder.

Will there be a noticeable difference btw the ECA and the K3T??

    Yes jeza,

The K3T is commercial kit and has a stepless grind adjustment. The KS is domestic, is slower and has a stepped grind adjustment. You will see lots of K3T out there in cafes on decaf duty.

If you have the space, go K3T. If space it tight, then you have to compromise- in which case, KS.

    Hope that helps...

    Thanks 2mcm,

I will take that on board.....I have to measure my space to see if I can cram in the K3T.....I have heard there is a mini hopper available that reduces the height. Does anyone out there have it / knows where to get it.

    Hi Jeza,

You will have to bring in a mini hopper from Europe or the USA. There are none in Australia.

Many have fashioned their own hoppers with cut down cocktail shakers being popular ;)
