From the few shots i pulled i found extraction occurred from the outside in. Never quite fully extracting from the centre before blonding occurred on the outside.
    How did you go marcus?

Could this be due to an underdosed filter basket? I was getting this with my shots when I underdosed. I dont get it with a fully updosed filter basket...ie no doughnut style channeling in the bottom of the puck with an updosed basket.

...and dont spend big. The no frills bags are just as good as the expensive brands. Youll save a packet!
Best enjoyed about a week or two before end of expiry date but if it doesnt have an expiry date, leave for at least 12 months - 18 to be on the safe side. Leave the beans in an open container in full sun a day or two after opening the bag* then store in the refrigerator when not using it *::)

*This will ensure it totally loses all flavour so you wont find out how disgusting it probably will be

Ive found that if the flavour is gone you can always retro-fit the flavour by adding a dessert spoon of Blend 43 to the group handle when dosing. *Ive found most people cant tell the difference.

I hope you realise at least one newbie is going end up putting Nescafe in their group handle. Sarcasm doesnt translate well in text.

Re: Wassat??? Freshly Ground Coffee :-?

True story. Once upon a time I worked in a cafe. We used to have regulars who came in once a week (nothing unusual there).

With them they would bring a couple of hotel type sachets of "international roast" and ask us to add steamed milk to make a cappuccino. *:-? In retrospect I now realise that Piazza Doro isnt the worlds best coffee, but I didnt think it was that bad. ;D

Feel free to move this if its gone too off topic.

When you just dont have the time to roast green beans, a microwave works a treat!

Also, when Im making coffee late at night and dont want to wake the house with grinder noises, I chew the beans and spit them into the group handle.

Ok, this thread is just wrong on so so many levels ;D

I love my Rancilio s24 with the built-in tank. Making milk-based drinks is so easy! I just fill the tank with cold milk and hey Presto! The latte just comes out of the group handle!
I use the steam arm for making gravy mostly.

Come on guys dont waste your time with all this fancy high tech mumbo jumbo, jugs get an electric kettle from Aldi, make sure the element is exposed for best results, or go to the salvos if your a tight arse, then grab the left over dreggs of caterers blend from the smoko room, why pay for coffee, its a rought!!!
and besides if you dont buy this coffee then the Vietnamese child labour rings would end, how then would the kiddies support there parents???

And dont forget to totally disregard any cleaning of the machine at all as this will add to the "well seasoned" taste of the machine.

And if you are a bit tight on money..just re use spent grounds as this also doubles as a "weak" shot!

Last but not lease... DO NOT wipe the steam arm as this adds character to your milk and lessons the chance of poor quality milk!

    *Tongue in cheek*

Heres a tip for when you run out of preground but want a nice cup of char.... Sweep the pavement where youve been roasting your coffee for the last 10 years and you are guaranteed to get enough beans for at least one final cup of unique one of a kind blend. Now that is posh!

Forgot to add: ensure you boil it up real good so it is sanitary.

ive found that not wiping the steam wand also helps build up a good layer of insulation meaning the steam doesnt cool down on its way to your milk jug!

************************************************** ******************************INTERRUPTING THIS FRIVOLOUS THREAD WITH A TRUE THOUGH NO-LESS ENTERTAINING STORY
    ************************************************** **********************
Some years ago we were travelling through Moree and felt the yearning for a cuppa. At that stage of our descent into snobbery deciding a place was worth a try meant ensuring that it had an espresso machine. *(Now of course we check the recommendations on this forum - much like those unfortunate folk stricken with extreme incontinence who have to plan their trips according to the availability of public toilets.) We found a cafe with such a machine. *I cant recall the name, though Im pretty sure they are not a site sponsor. *I ordered a cappuccino, raising an eyebrow at the decidedly Sydney price, and soon heard the reassuring sound of milk being steamed. *Can you imagine my horror; can you imagine my incredulity when I tasted...Nescafe Blend 43?!?!
I looked behind the counter and sure enough right beside the machine was an oversize tin of the stuff...

    BEAUTIFUL!!!

I had one of those gourmet treats in the heart of trendy Hutt Street Adelaide, and Ive never been able to re-create the taste sensation.

You were a lucky man to get one in such an out-of-the-way place as Moree.

Re: Wassat??? Freshly Ground Coffee :-?

Last weekend we took a run down south and visited several cafes with pleasant experiences, we visited a lavender and berry farm with a tranquil lake, ducks floating on the water, flowers and trees of every hue with a quaint little shop/cafe so we decided morning tea was in order. Scones with jam made on the farm and cream were ordered along with a couple of flat whites.
The scones were pure bliss, big light and delicious, the flat whites "well" where do I start, tepid, only 2/3 full and then I noticed the Douwe Egberts sugar sachets on the saucer, I had just paid $3.50 for a cold cup of instant c...........p!!! In my defence the kitchen was out of sight which precluded any inspection of their equipment :( :( :( :(

I think many of you have totally missed the point, good coffee will only be appreciated by those who take the time to understand the essence of freeze dried, slightly mouldy (someone left a wet spoon in the can) out of date international roast.

Those of us who dont have the time to be coffee snobs choose machines worth thousands, grinders that probably cost more than your first car and roasters that could have put your children through college all for what,

a cup of char/tar every morning just so when you drive to work you dont take ur car and run over all those cyclists who clog your lane or the ladies who insist on putting makeup on while driving.

Lets have a loud HuraH for fellow CSs Australia all over

    Amen,

A relative of mine has an fantastic machine. One of those fully automatic Delonghis, and uses crap stale beans, makes watery espressos, cant make a latte because all the milk is too forthy, and swears that her coffees are better than ours because the machine costs more than our machine and grinder put together.
Ive tried telling her that youll only get out what you put in, but some people dont want to listen.

Have they *tried* your coffee? Whenever my family visit me, they go home cursing me because Ive smothered them with good coffee they simply cant find at home.

Let your coffee speak for itself.

    Good one mate.... ;D

I cop the same thing from my Family too but I do at least send them freshly roasted beans for Plunger or Pour-Over use. They still cant work out why they cant get the coffee to taste the same as it does at our place though.... ;)

Well this one will stop you in your tracks.

My father doesnt like my coffee reckons its not as nice as ... Blend 43, so whenever he comes he brings his own small container of 43 and asked me to make it for him, he also belives that my 6900 doesnt make the water hot enough to extract the flavour from the 43 so he now alao brings his own kettle.

Because he is my father i oblige him and also the fact that if he doesnt appreciate freshly roasted and freshly ground coffee i dont have to waste those 12g of pure heaven on him.

Just some further background he did complain to me when maccas removed there dripolators and replaced them with there auto machines reckons he quite liked that coffee

Oh well, at the end of the day, you cant force your idea of good coffee on to someone else.

I will say, my father was a bit recalcitrant at first, wanting it extremely hot, single shot in a large mug with two sugars. Recently when he visited he started warming to the idea of a double shot in 65degree milk. He even hung over my shoulder to see what on earth I was doing. So maybe theres hope yet.

My mum still says my coffee is to cold. But instead of making it how she gets it from gloria jeans, I still make it 65 deg cold latte.

Just got Dad a syphon for belated birthday present I think he was rapted.
He said now when his friend Costa goes to the coffee shop, he can get some Coffex coffee. I quickly snatched the syphon back and told him I will give you some coffee, just let me know when you want more.
