Grinder to mate with my Breville Ikon

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All
As a new CS member I must say that coffee is becoming more than just a hobby for me and im scared where it might end..

In any case I have had my Breville Ikon for just over a year now running perfectly, i just purchased unpressurized Krups baskets to use with my existing (choke) preground Vittoria storebought coffee.

After ready many of these forums i knew not to expect any crema and sure enough no crema but the coffee was infinitely smoother, less bitter and less burnt, it was actually enjoyable. *
So now i need to look for a grinder... Im not sold on the emo480 as it seems they are a hit and miss, so looking for a second hand rocky or perhaps a Lelit PL53 if anyone has any thoughts about this grinder.
I am trying to follow the advice on this site and try to upgrade to a better grinder from the beginning to avoid upgrading a year later as it seems so many have done.

And getting back to the crema... using fresh beans ground at the time of being used will i expect to see some decent crema from my pulls?

    thanks guys * :)

If you are short on cash
    Get a Kyocera hand grinder

    I recommend the Rocky grinder
I know the Rocky grinder costs more than your Breville Ikon but if you decide to upgrade the coffee machine you wont need to upgrade the grinder (just my 2 cents)

Absolutely! Dont be devastated it you get little or no crema the first time, it can take a while to dial in the grinder. Tamping freshly roasted & ground coffee is also very different tamping stale, dry pre-ground coffee, so this will also take some getting use to.

Iím guessing the Lelit grinder is the same one used in the Combi machine, in which case you should be able to get good results (speaking from experience). If you can get a good second-hand Rocky then all the better.

If you are on a dollar diet, then I recommend a Sunbeam em0450/0480 - depending on your personal tastes.

Pretty much the same grinding burr set as the lelit.

You can always use it for decaf if upgraditis strikes.

Let us know how the new baskets go. (with fresh non-supermarket beans of course)

How many coffees do you make at a sitting; in a week?

For one or two at a time I find the Kyocera does a great job. Ive just had one of the best Indian Tiger Mountain coffees yet out of a Kyo and an Ikon (non-pressurised basket).

Re: Grinder to mate with my Breville Ikon

thanks guys, am happy to pay between 150-350 depending on the grinder unless i found a really cheap emo480 to get me started.

ive been reading lots of different forums it seems that the machine is significantly less important than the grinder. The Ikon is fine for now, it looks good in our kitchen, is compact and when visitors come over and want a milk based coffee the 360deg swivel want is really good.

The other thing i noticed when pulling shots now with the unpressurized basket is there seems to be coffee flowing through the basket eject button from the bottom of the group handle.. No major drama just a little more cleaning involved now.

Thanks for the advise on the grinder, ill wait for the sales or keep on the lookout for a good second hand grinder.
Sorry to move from one issue to another but is there a naked group handle available for the breville? is it worth considering?
    thanks again guys

Greg sorry to answer your question i have between 2-4 dbl espressos a day, the wife may have one every other day and on the weekend with friends over i may pull another 10 shots so overall around 20-30 per week.

Get rid of the eject button and let the coffee come through the big hole left behind. Means you can only do 1 cup at a time, but I noticed an immediate change to the taste of my shots (for the better) that they werent being impacted by nasty stuff left in the bottom of the PF

Hey Senator good call i might do that asap but i would prefer to do it to a spare group handle any idea where i can find a second GH?

I think ive settled on an amount to spend pending wifes approval ill say 250-350 which puts me into either a new lelit pl53 or second hand rocky territory..

Re: Grinder to mate with my Breville Ikon

Hi Guys just thought id update you as to what i bought.
I picked up an 09 rocky doserless yesterday and went to the local cafe who sold me a bag of veneziano.
It was already dialled into around 9 which tended to strain the flow and the crema, still playing with it but dropped it back to around 11 that may still be a little too fine but nice amount of real crema brought a smile to my face, it was really smooth with an almost sweet aftertaste.

Rocky is a little bit of a handful with the Ikons group handle you need to lightly tamp and keep on grinding as it tends to be a bit clumpy (any suggestions?) and with the narrow PF it can go everywhere but overall im really happy, i couldnt sleep last night from all the coffe i drank :)
The puck comes out reasonably dry and consisten so i should be able to pull some sweet shots really soon..

    Thanks for everybodys help!!

    Gday Kantis.... :)

Something you could try to make grinding/dosing a little easier, is to find a container that will hold at least the amount for a Double Shot and then transfer this to the Group-Handle (GH) Basket.

You can also make a funnel from a small round yoghurt tub that will be close.... Just cut the bottom off it so that it sits neatly inside the Basket and then dose away.

    Cheers :)
    Mal.

    Gday Mal
Thanks mate i am reading up on the Weiss Distribution Technique at the moment so I may give that a try. *I would just love to find another group handle that i can modify to a naked group handle now so i can really see whats going on down there. *Only problem with a naked GH is it wont necessarily work with the krups basket im using that has a smaller area for extraction.
Overall though the Ikon is turning out to be a great little machine and the coffees coming out taste better than most caffes i go to, ive also noticed that the temperature is higher now than when i was using stale coffee i am not sure why. *The Rocky really complements the Ikon in looks as they both have a nice stainless steel finish with green tint plastic and they look great in my new kitchen :)

I dont think its possible as they are different species.
Even if you can successfully produce offspring Im afraid theyre likely to be sterile and therefore unable to breed.

You need to make sure it does more than just "GRIND" in order to produce offspring ;D

    HA! ;D

Well i made the wife her first coffee today, was a little half arsed but still ok, managed to finally show her the difference between a good coffee and a poor one. Even she noticed there was no bitter or burnt taste which was fantastic and it justified the extra $$$ on the rocky
