    Compak K10 WBC

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Got my new grinder on Thursday and have been trying to get a shot that resembled the ones appearing on in the many pour videos online. *I have finally gotten there but not without realising the way i did things (with the pressurised basket) wasnt even close to what I should have been doing.

It took me until today to work up the courage to stress my EM6910 to the level that people suggest - around the 2:00+ mark on the gauge and going over the sunbeam method - particularly the way the baskets were designed and reading the material on CS. *Previously I had only been working it up to about 12:00.

The results are fantastic though :)

I repeated the procedure and finally got the honey like poor without the splattering and the nice dark brown, tiger-striped crema this arvo.

Still getting a lightly acidic taste which could partially be the coffee, the pour length seemed right but I will probably spend some time tomorrow nailing it since im easily able to dose the correct amount - albeit wasting a few grams to make sure its level to the top of the basket before compressing it.

Has anyone found on the EM6910 that the default single filter basket doesnt really do as well as the double basket? or should I persist with it?

As you would expect Im pretty much buzzing at the moment *:D

All singles are fit for ash trays and roaches... Nough said..

Also... Check ya sweet spot... *If ya way over the sweet spot... The EM will break sooner than the grinder or you..

Dont trust me... Just accept that experience is worth lots of less than ideal reading.

This seems to be a popular point of view on this site and I really disagree with it. I know its easier to do doubles but it is well worth persisting with singles so as to not waste good coffee.

I have a 6910 at work and had a 6910 at home which Ive moved to another house. Ive now got the wonderful VBM junior and I use nothing but the single basket on all these machines with great success. Admittedly I tend to updose a little but as long as your dosing, levelling and tamping is consistent and you adjust your grind accordingly then you can get great shots with single baskets. I only make small adjustments when I do doubles.

I am the only coffee drinker at home, apart from when I have visitors, and to use doubles for one person seems like a ridiculous waste. Its like preparing two meals and only eating one of them.

So John P keep persisting with the singles. It might take a long trial and error process to get it right but its worth it.

Yeah will try giving it a go since I am using a naked portafilter and I have got the double pretty good and its worth not taking in quite so much caffeine so quickly and spreading them out through the day ;)

I think the pressure, volume and speed looks very much within an acceptable range - but I will try the sweet spot testing AM described elsewhere (i forgot to look earlier for the markings on the top of the puck). *He also pointed to this guide, which was good to read after a few unsatisfactory attempts - so thanks to AM for mentioning that :)

Dosing and tamping need to be improved a bit since Im dosing as the grinds hit the doser so it will take a bit more practice to get used to that. *This should improve the slight channeling that happens throughout the pour.

Will probably need to get a better tamp to eventually to sure up the edges since the sunbeam tamp doesnt quite fill the basket. *The grind looks very nice and just tapping the portafilter to settle the grinds in the basket works very well by itself :)

I have my machine and grinder at home currently, but I usually keep it at work and make coffee for up to a dozen people fairly occasionally. The grinder should help make the process a bit quicker and more consistent. :)

I took some pictures on Thursday but they are a tad dark so Ill take some when the machine goes back into work. *Im sure most people who are interested have seen pictures of the grind distribution but I might pop a few up later too.

I have noticed how much the grinds accumulate in the chute leading from the burrs. *Doesnt take too much to clean them out though.

The dosing action like many have said is very clean and smooth. *I havent yet tried it with a semi-full doser though. I might have to try that when making coffee for a few people.

So John it was you who bought the K10 out from under me...
I rang on Friday to order the K10 and my new espresso machine, and found it had been sold. :(

    Bugger, that sucks :(

It had been sitting there for months and I had been in weeks before taking a look at it specifically. *I actually thought they might have had a few of them but I found out that they only had that one when I picked it up on Thursday.

If they hadnt of had one I probably would have ordered one from Sydney or Melbourne.

Im very glad to have finally got it but if the guy I had of been told someone else was after it I probably would have waited or got it from somewhere else :(

Ironically they had the shipment of Rockys that I was told were on their way a couple of months ago arrive on the morning I picked it up.

Are they going to help order another one in? What machine did you get?

I wouldnt mind at all if you would like me to bring it around so you can try it with your machine for a few hours.

I have noticed this too with the K10 WBC. I use an artists brush to clean it out and have noticed that if you turn it on again briefly, more ground coffee shoots out - PLEASE dont stick the brush in there whilst the burrs are running - hairy coffee is the only result *:o. Then brush again so the shute is clean again. If you are grinding for one shot, this also means that you are more likely to get the correct amount of coffee! At the moment I am weighing my beans before I grind if I am only doing one shot, so I dont waste too much.

All good John, I have mine now :) *It wasnt a problem, just waited an extra (long) week. Thanks for the offer though.

I now have my new Junior regal 2L and the K10 WBC up and running at home. Off to a reasonable start, but plenty of practising and dialling in to come...

Thanks to Scott and Attilio at Cosmorex for the great advice, service and support.

Awesome, good to hear. *You should be able to get much more from the coffee than I can. *Its a fantastic grinder overall though and the grinds practically distribute themselves with a few taps. *:D

I have found the two settings I need to get a good pour with both the single and double filter baskets now. I will probably put a sticky label around the tuning part of the dial to mark the locations more accurately :P

rynnlic, I think there was a thread I saw or some article one modifications to the shute that can help prevent as many grinds being held back from the doser. *Im not sure if it can be purchased somewhere or not currently.

It mainly just involved pulling the plastic roof above the shute off and modifying the shute to ramp down toward the doser and seal off the edges. *I couldnt find it with a quick search but Ive seen it around somewhere and it has a few pictures.

    Awesome combo EconoMan.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

It wont take you all that long to get everything dialled in and pouring excellent coffee. So-called God Shots are not very far away.... 8-)
