Diamond Compak K6 purchase... need cleaning tips!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Ive been keeping my eye out for a grinder for a few months to pair with my San Marino CK rebuild when I get it finished. *Found a local Diamond Compak K6, took a look today and snapped it up for $300. *

Heres a piccy anyway. *Not sure if thats a bargain or not but considering that Gino Rossi RR45s in average condition turn $250 in evilbay I didnt think it was too bad. *No frieght to pay either.

From what Ive read it seems to be a Compak K6 (the model number has been worn away on the plate). *Might be a year 2000 model? *Its stepped which I didnt realise until I got it home. *Not sure if there is a way to mod it to stepless? *Possibly using parts from the newer version. *Might cost a heap. *63.5mm burrs. * Came out of a recently closed cafe. *Seemed in pretty good nick.

Im going to give it a clean before use. *Anyone got a manual for the older style K6? *A service manual or any tips on stripping it down? *Please... pretty please!!!!

Also having not used a doser before, should the doser lever spring back or is it designed to be manually flicked forwards and backwards (like it is now).

Thanks in advance for all the help CSers.

Easy to pull apart and clean this grinder

It will be a much easier job than the 2 group rebuild * ::)

What do you want to know specifically
Ohh and congrats on the purchase

It springs back after you flick it forward and repeat until you are done

Burrs/housing removal is very similar to rocky, okay taking them apart. *More worried about the doser... are there springs and stuff in there to be concerned about???

Havent owned a doser before... learning curve again! :) :) :)

Also is dialing it in just like old rocky? *ie find true zero etc etc?

Should be a nice pairing for the San Marino CK whens its up and running. *Lucky shes only a single group KK. *A 2 group would probably take me forever! *;D

Just have to negotiate some more bench space in the kitchen... problem is that Mrs Lacehim then tries to negotiate a NEW kitchen! *::)

The spring may have just slipped out of its mount
This is a picture (Mazzer Major) it may be identical to yours
Not hard to remove the bottom of the doser to check

No spring in there, so I will order one, and a new set of genuine burrs. Might as well start a fresh. Started cleaning it all down anyway, but stuggling to figure out how the doser is removed? Would be easier to work on it if I could get it off.

Would any helpful K6 owns care to take a photo of the doser lever spring, and how its fitted?

Should have 2 screws inside the doser - near the top

    PM sent re schematic
It shows your doser return spring to be a normal extension spring
But a second spring is noted as a doser stopping spring

Had a look at the schematic, no screws on mine at the top like in the drawing. I will check out a few others and see if they changed the design a bit later on. Got it pulled apart a bit. The doser isnt as scary as it looked. :)

A blurry shot from the bottom (best I could get) The screws at the bottom of the photo I have completely removed and the doser is still firmly attached.

Can anyone explain why the burrs have the raised outer rings around bottom of the burr. The rocky burrs have these too but coffee gets all caught up in the gap in there.

Also on this grinder the plastic part that sits on top of the top burr carrier leaves a gap between the brass burr and the plastic sleve. There were beans and coffee grounds rattling around in there. Ewwwww. Will be keeping my eye on that bit in the future. ;)

Got if off. Once the screws at the bottom are off it just pulled up. Took a bit of wiggling to get it to come up but now off and much easier to work on. Woohoo.

Got a few emails back from CS sponsors. Thanks for your help.

Seems Expobar are the new Compak importers. Anyone happen to have their phone number. Its not on their website and they havent replied to my query... getting impatient now!

Seems the older K6 has 63mm Burrs so Ill have to be careful when ordering them. Also need a Doser Return Spring & 2 new feet and its will be ready to go.

Pulled it all apart, just waiting on parts to reassemble. It wasnt too bad, but needed a good clean because it had been sitting around for a while with coffee grounds in the grinder. Im resisting the urge to paint it... resist... resist... :)

They got back to me... phew. I cant wait to get this cleaned up and then I can have a face off with the rocky. I would love to see the difference and also how much of a diff the doser will make. Im assuming (and we all know what happens when ya do that) that there will be less clumping with the doser.

The doser sifts, breaks and separates any clumps

If red goes with the decor keep it
You could break it up a little and paint highlight sections on the sides & back

Re: Diamond Compak K6 purchase... need cleaning tips!

I would really really appricate it if can Compak K6 owners (or anyone with an idea about dosers) could take a look at this photo and tell me how the doser lever spring fits and also how the counter connects.

Is the spring in the photo below the one required? If so how does it fit?

Also in the diagrams Ive seen there is a Doser Star Spring between the metal star and the plastic parts of the star. On this grinder there is a white plastic tube. What does the Doser Star Spring do? And should there be one there instead of this plastic tube???

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Diamond Compak K6 purchase... need cleaning tips!

The way I see it is

The star cam should trip the counter every time it passes it

The spring above should be fitted to to the star cam it acts as a one way travel lock spring

The extension spring fits on the hole thats on the triangle part of the handle & on the hole on the front of the doser section

    See pic re return spring

This is what I feel is the correct fitting of the springs and have based my recommendations from the photos 8-)

Re: Diamond Compak K6 purchase... need cleaning tips!

KK, Thanks for the help with this. *I can see your theory but the spring would then pull the lever forward not back? *I thought it was suppose to be at the back, pull foward to dose and it returns to towards the grinder housing... am I correct?

It already has a non return spring on the lever which uses the spring in the photo. *Ive pointed it out in the photo below.

Also attached a schematic from expobar which shows what Im up against. *There are about 3 different springs mentioned for the lever in the parts list but no info about fitting it. *The round spring at the bottom that says it fits all seems to have a groove in the bottom cover which mine doesnt have. *This is driving me nuts!!!!

Found a helpful CSer who has a K7 and there doser should be far removed from mine. *They might beable to take a photo (its only two screws and a plastic plate that needs removed). *If that doesnt work out I will just order all the springs and figure it out somehow.

Just got the doser to clean out and it will be ready for parts and some beans. *I removed the motor and cleaned out the inside. *Only a couple of dead bugs in there. *Pretty clean really, Ill be a happy man if I get this spring sorted out and get it working.

Emailed Expobar the photos and a nice begging letter asking if they can let me know what spring to use and how to fit it! :) Fingers crossed they can help.

    Hey Michael,

finally got a chance to take some photos of my grinder. As you very helpfully pointed out, it was actually a K-7, and weve just fitted new burrs to it (not Compak ones tho - we got lucky with some generic burrs the same size) and its performing very well. Has some lovely shots out of the naked PF already.

I hope you can see the detail you need in the following photos. Let me know if you need the full sized versions.

    Cheers
    Stu.

Re: Diamond Compak K6 purchase... need cleaning tips!

Thanks Stu, that helps a lot, Thank you so much. The spring on the top did that slot into a groove that runs along the plastic cover you took off? (like part 14 in the schmatic three posts up listed as adaptable to all models).

Im guessing you got it back together again okay? ;) Its hard to see in the photos but did the spring fit over the black disc that its stilling on? Just trying to get my head around how it all fits together.

    Thanks again.

Re: Diamond Compak K6 purchase... need cleaning tips!

    Hey Michael,

I did get it back on, but not without a bit of a scratching-my-head moment. I wouldnt have worked it out without having just taken the cover off (and therefore knowing which way it needed re-inserting).

You can tell which way the spring it supposed to rotate, so I simply twisted the cover the other way until the end of the spring went into the slot on the cover, then held the spring in place while I twisted the cover back around so that the screws were aligned correctly. It will need holding in place while you get the first screw in.

As for the other end of the spring, Im afraid I didnt pay much attention to where it slots in, but Im guessing its more straightforward than the cover-end.

The end result should be that the cover twists out of place as soon as the screws are undone (ie. its quite tight).

    Make sense?
    Cheers
    Stu.

Thanks Stu it makes perfect sense to me. Thank you for everything youve done. Enjoy your K7! Let me know how you go with it.

Ive emailed Expobar and asked to order the spring you have, and a new plastic cover because mine doesnt have the groove in the cover that yours has. Hopefully I can get the parts this week and get it all back together and ready to play with this weekend with Lucy.

Re: Diamond Compak K6 Project Complete

Got parts from Expobar today by express post.

New burrs, New Doser Star, New Doser Lever Spring, 2 New Feet.

All fitted. *They didnt have the official doser lever spring and the one they supplied was 1.5cm too long, but I cut it to size, bent myself a new hook and its working beautifully. *My only other option was to wait 3 weeks for supplies from Italy! *:-?

KK your concept wasnt far off and helped me get it sorted, thanks.

Thought I would post this photo up. *Expobar only had generic burrs but said they came out the same factory, just without a stamp. *True or not? *Anyway there was a pretty big difference in the existing burrs and the new ones (I dont know where the old burrs came from). *The old burrs had smaller cutters, the new has bigger ones, the dimensions where the same. *It poses the questions, will it make a difference and if so whats better?

Ive attached some photos for those that like a good piccy of a completed project.

My wife thinks this coffee hobby of mine is taking over the kitchen...

Time for a test run. *Anyone got any tips? *Ive found true zero, just dont know where to start from there. *Ive heard of folk running 500gms though these just to dial them in... *:o

Also will a K3 gourmet doser fit the K6?

Big thanks to KK for his help and stuartgrant for suppling photo of his K7. *Thanks guys. *I really enjoyed stripping this down, and cleaning it out. *I learnt alot of how it works, how its put together etc etc. *Im just loving these rebuilds. *If any K6 owners need a hand with there K6 just let me know.

I had a laugh, good one AM.

Lucys soon to be upgraded once I get a couple or more parts to rebuild the San Marino, then who knows... probably Lucy will be moved on.

Thanks for the tips. Off to try that out. I alway use quality beans :)

Re: Diamond Compak K6 purchase... need cleaning tips!

Im using Mocha Java from Pioneer @ 10 days old. *I just love this coffee in a latte. *Tried 1/2 a turn and it was too coarse, only pulled 4 or so shots so far but the last one was just over 30mls in 25 from a double at just under a 1/4 from true zero. *Tasted yum I have to admit. *Somewhere to start from at least.

So far Ive noticed that the grinding is much quicker than lucys rocky and the doser is so different. *No clumps!!!!! *Its actually making dosing the filter very different. *With the rocky I could only get a decent pour if I updosed as instructed by Tim when he did my training. *Maybe because of the clumps??? *With the compak Ive been using the same method, same taps but the coffee grounds settle much more. *The puck is dry post extraction too, where as if I did the same with the rocky it would be a bit mushy.

Im going to have heaps of fun playing with the two of them. *Pity its only me drinking it. *I might have to invite the neighbours over for coffee or if any CSers fancy an invite... *:)

Re: Diamond Compak K6 purchase... need cleaning tips!

Apologies for the thread dig, but found this after encountering some problems with my K6.

    Symptoms -

Pulling lever on doser would not engage the doser mechanism and the lever would not return to the start. I could manually turn it using a chopstick and pushing the star around, but no luck with the lever.

    Problem -

broken doser spring. This is what was preventing the lever from returning, this also prevented the mechanism from resetting and engaging the next cog.

    Solution -

Im somewhat of a wuss when it comes to tinkering, I seem to be missing the mechanical gene, however, this thread and a diagram of the assembly on the manual gave me enough confidence to "give it a crack", that and the motivation that if I had to send the grinder away for repair, it would be a week or so without coffee, so not really an option.

Took about 1 1/2 hours or so to get it all undone, doser off, spring removed, reassembled, dissassembled again to insert chute spout still sitting on the table, then reassembled again. All tested and functioning semi-properly, handle is manual both directions for now, no spring back.

Will track down a NZ supplier and get one ordered.

Thanks for the thread, saved me heaps
