    Ascaso or Lelit?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

Im new to the differences in grinders and was just wondering if I should get a ascaso or lelit grinder (both around $300 currently) or something else?

$300 is the absolute maximum I can spend right now so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Keep your eye out for 2nd hand.

Its too late now but a Mazzer Mini went for $200 at OMaras auction yesterday.

The Ascaso does a good job for Plunger down to Espresso. It is a little prone to a build up of fines around the sweeper below the bottom burr. Every month or so a simple couple of screws and remove the top burr for a clean is recomended IMO. At Espresso range the Kyocera hand grinder (sub $100) kills it for grind consistency.

On the Lelit I think you will find the burr set is fairly similar if not the same as the Ascaso someone in the trade should be able to confirm that.

OMaras have online but for the grinders and coffee machines they old fashioned auctions.

Actually been given a choice by the vendor for aluminium Ascaso or stainless steel Lux grinder for the same price... opinions?

    Re: Ascaso or Lelit?

The Lux is a fantastic unit! I am running it beside my rocky and I am worried that the Lux may be a better unit for consistency and clumping. Rocky is 1yo Lux is 10! It is however very (teeth rattlingly) noisy in comparison. I am led to believe that the sunbeams are the same burr set and very similar internally however a side by side with my friends 0480 shows the Sunbeam to be most inferior in shot quality despite achieving very similar pours on the HX. Same beans, clean units but a real puzzler??? Someone clever may be able to offer a simple NON clash of the Titans explanation.... I mean seriously the Lux Vs a Robur....

    Good luck with your choice!

    Re: Ascaso or Lelit?

    Agree with Brett "lilmeh".... 8-)

The Lux grinders are a really good quality, small grinder and whats more, they can be retro-fitted at a later date to Micrometrical Grind Adjustment (infinite adjustment) if you should so wish. If this feature had been available when I had my Lux, I would probably still have it sitting on the bench.... ::)

Cant comment on the Ascaso though, as Ive never come across one....

    All the best,
    Mal.

So Brett and Mal, or anyone for that matter, is there a difference between Nemox Lux and Imat Lux?

No, its the same machine but with a different badge on it. Happens a lot with mid-range coffee hardware Im afraid (and even with some of the top shelf stuff too, sometimes).... :)
