    Mazzer Super Jolly Electronic

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I noticed on the Mazzer website, that they have produced a Super Jolly-E.

I have been pretty vocal in expressing my dislike of the mini-e as the timer is not much chop. The Super Jolly-E employs the same time regulation used in the electronic conical range and this does work superbly.

I reckon it would be a terrific home setup with a short hopper ;)

    Specs:
    • 64mm burr set @1400 r.p.m. (50 Hz), 1600 r.p.m. (60 Hz). It uses the same burr set as the SJ doser, so will operate at the same speed.
    • Stepless micrometrical grinding adjustment.
    • On demand grinding.
    • Electronic dose adjustment. Single and double dose with independent adjustment to 0.05 sec
    • Digital display with shot counter.
    • An aluminium hand tamper and a support for tamping are included.
    • Available in single phase only.
    • Hopper capacity 1.2kg. All mini hoppers will fit.
    • Approx 14kg

I am unsure if its available here yet.

I was thinking of getting a Mini E, but this looks pretty good instead. However, even though it is better, I am not sure how much more I am willing to pay. A couple of hundred yes, but more.... maybe not.

What does everyone think, and any idea of pricing?

:-? I would think thats pretty unlikely Dane given the price difference of quite a few hundy between doser mini and doser sj price. My instincts are few hundred more than a mini-e, so you may well be looking at $1.5k. We shall see...

    hey stop laughing at me.....

i was speeling chute with shoot and shute i new it was wrong but i could not think of the right spelling I had a laugh

anyway as normally i only load enough for a double the timer would not work well due to a few popcorning beans. I thought you would need to have the weight of more beans keeping the "time" consistant.

I guess you could just increase the time to compensate and it could just run a few seconds longer then you need.....

but i have a SJ and would like that chute option......

    Gday swarve,

Predicting landed prices is always a mugs game and until the importers have them in the warehouse and do the numbers, its anybodies guess...

Given the relative prices of SJ v Major V Major-E, Id guess thats about where it should be (but with local support)...

Well know actual prices early in the New Year....

Interesting! *This certainly looks like a great home grinder.

What are the issues mentioned with the mini-e timer system? Just not quite as accurate as the SJ?

The SJ and mini-e both have 64mm burrs spinning at the same speed - yet the SJ is about twice as fast to grind the same dose because it has a completely different burr design with more aggresive (faster) grinding.

I wonder which one results in better quality of grind?

All I can say is that I am very pleased I got my SJ from Chris a few years ago when the prices were hot. But for sure the e sounds like a nice bit of kit.

For anyone who can fit the SJ hopper I would recommend that rather than the mini...it just suits the SJ so well and looks great together.

    Cheers

Hi folks, (very) long time lurker, first time poster!

Im looking for a grinder to complement a second-hand Giotto Evoluzione I snapped up recently, and the SJ-e looks like a pretty interesting bit of gear.

Has anybody pulled the trigger on one of these yet, or else have any impressions on the timing compared to that on the Mazzer Mini?

    Cheers

    ;D Adam,

Hope you love it when it arrives and it would be terrific if you could post a review once it and you have bedded in.

For mine, I just cant see why youd bother with a mini-e when the SJ-e is so much better for little more.

My opinion is its this v M4D and then up to the conicals: Kony-e, M7D et al...

    Enjoy ;)

Got a quick question for SJ-E users - how many seconds of grind have you got to dose your double shot PF basket?

I seem to keep coming back to around the 12 seconds mark.

    Gday Muscles,

Im using the double shot basket supplied with the Giotto Rocket Evoluzione. Thanks for the hints - I am getting very close to the shot that I want.

What is this three letter acronym "VST"? Im not familiar with it, so Im not truly understanding what you are communicating.

Hi can anyone tell me why a SJ-E is so much better than a Mini-E?

Id be REALLY pushing to fit a SJ-E in my space, so looking to the Mini-E; but it gets poor reviews - I cant work it out :S

    Slower grind speed I understand....
    But grind quality?
    Doser timer accuracy?

If anyone can giv eme the height of the SJ-E with the shortest available hopper, id like to know
    Cheers!

    Re: Mazzer Super Jolly Electronic

Grind quality is probably similar, but the timer is digital on the SJ-E and analogue on the Mini-E

Digital = you set the time using buttons and can be set in 0.05 sec increments

Analogue = timer is set by turning a screw driver - you cant specify an exact time

Thanks for the reply...Im guessing theres no way to shoehorn the SJs Electronic doser timer on to a mini-E..thatd be too easy.

It turns out the height of the SJ-E even with shortest hopper is still >60cm, so too tall for my cabinets. & Id like to have at least 100gm worth of hopper capacity.
    I guess its a Mini-E for me then. :-/

The SJ-E is 510mm with a standard mini hopper. A super short hopper would lose a further 30-40mm.

Not sure about elsewhere in Australia, but they are almost impossible to find in Melbourne at present. We can get them, but there are not many.

    Cheers

Love it. We have a mini-e at work and SJ-E puts it to bed. Heaps quicker, at least double the speed & no mess. Its not much bigger than the mini really. Especially with the super short hopper.
    Thanks Chris

You can buy a kit to add on the dosing cone, in place of your doser - BUT it is very expensive.
Im not sure if Mazzer have a retrofit solution for the timer, but you can use an external timer or if youre handy with electronics and 240V you can build in a timer on the grinder itself - its been done on someones Robur.

Any coffee machine specialist selling the Mazzer grinder will be able to get these short hoppers. I got a "medium" sized one that can take 1/2 kg of beans, but theres a "mini" sized one that takes less.

You should also be able to find these hoppers on eBay, but of course, its better to build a relationship with a coffee specialist rather than a faceless nameless eBay seller. ;)

And now I find THIS topic...
Didnt need it. I bought this very one with the short hopper from Chris yesterday and will have it early next week...
    Yay!* ::)
    ;D Adam,

Hope you love it when it arrives and it would be terrific if you could post a review once it and you have bedded in.

    Enjoy ;)

    Chris
Well Ive had it nearly a year, and I have the following things to say about it.

The coffee is so much better out of this than the Rocky I was using. I put the reason down to consistency of particle size. I like the fact that I no longer have a doser. Its fast enough and quiet enough too, for the money. Could spend more for faster quieter, but at the expense of room. As it is, spending this much for a domestic use is a luxury.

I soon found a problem, the motor wouldnt work any more. In short, it had clumped up and jammed. I had to pull the top apart and clean out all the grinds.
It was suggested to me that I remove the earth mesh at the exit chute, so I did this. Wow. MESS! Static sends the coffee everywhere! But at least it doesnt jam. I made my own earth mesh, less materialistic, out of some thin copper wire. It works, but since I have had this grinder I am not roasting as dark, trying to reduce the possibility of oily beans and as such, clumping. So I intend to put the earth mesh back in one day.

It doesnt need much movement at all to adjust the grind, this surprised me. The range of movement I use on most beans is very little.
I may need to pull apart again and apply a light grease to the thread, as it doesnt move a tiny bit, but needs a bit more pressure to get it to turn. Not too worried.
The only time I need to adjust the grind by a fair bit, is with some really dry Indian Robusta beans that I have. But you get the grind right for these beans (really powdery), and the coffee is surprisingly delicious. Yeah, a straight Robusta shot...

It is a pity I didnt know about the super short hopper when I bought it, I bought the short hopper option but then saw the photo (above) of the really short one. Im used to mine now so cant be bothered replacing, but certainly the super short one is a better domestic option.
The counter on the top of my unit currently indicates about 2300 doses, not bad going. I drink double shots at home, so thats still way over 1000 coffees in the time Ive had it. Even taking into account material costs of a cup of coffee, I think the grinder has paid for itself over buying from a cafe. And, certainly, definitely, the coffee I make at home is better than anything I buy around here.

    Would I recommend this grinder?
    Absolutely. :)

Reviving an old thread. Like the look of the Super Jolly E with short hopper to side step from San Marco 95A. For those who weigh and single dose with this, what's retention like?
From vids I've seen of this in action I like: 1) Mazzer 2) the portafilter holder actually seems to hold the PF - hands free sounds useful 3) seems relatively mess free once you've got dose timing pretty right.

Tempted but my conscience (wife?) makes me think I should just get new burrs in the 95A and keep on grinding.

As you are weighing/single dosing, why pay for the Electronic dosing if you dont use it ?
Why bother with a hopper at all ?
There are many good grinders that would fit your needs
