    New grinder recommendation

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi everyone

My smart grinder died this morning, and as such I am looking for a new grinder. I think id like to spend a little more and get some sort of an upgrade.

I want something that is easily adjustable because i often go from plunger to filter, and i have just recently bought a Sunbeam EM6910 for espressos. It needs to obviously go fine enough without any modifications. Id also like something that is easy to pull apart and clean without too much fuss.

    Thank you

    Ds

I am happy to spend around $400 if need be.

When you say Smart grinder you are talking about the breville Smart grinder? Im surprised as it wouldnt be that old. I would if i was you be looking to spend a little more cause in the long run if you got yourself one of the Compak K3s you would be pretty happy you spent that extra bit of money.

I just think that for under $400 i would have concidered the smart grinder.

    Chris :)

    Re: New grinder recommendation

Yeah, not really looking to get another smart grinder after my last one. Its not really the issue that it has somehow gone dead, but rather the fact that with two shims, i couldnt grind fine enough, and adding one or two more resulted in grating and no coffee being able to come out... I dont really want to go through that again even tho i loved how well it worked with filter/plunger. I want something that will work from the get-go. I think i had it for over a year...possibly a year and a half?

I was just browsing a sponsor site and the K3 caught my eye. There are barely any video reviews/demos on youtube though...so im going to have to do a further search here and on google. Happy to spend a little more if it calls for it. As long as it lasts.

Prior to my Breville smart grinder, I had a Nemmox Lux. Lasted something like six years, and is still going today (gave to a friend). I want something that will go the distance like that...

I just saw that you can email all sponsors, so i might do that as well.

Iberital Challenge grinders are very similar to the Nemox lux. I think they actually share a lot of components. The main difference being that the Iberital is stepless.

If its still under warranty you can take it back for a free replacement. Most people seem pretty happy with them so Im surprised youre having issues.

I dont know where you are from but if you email a sponsor they would be happy to give you a demo of a K3. I cant remember where but somewhere on here there is a comparison done with one of these and a Mazzer. If you talk to most people on here they will say spend a little more and go for a K3 at that price.

Im no seller for them either, but they are great for the price.

    Cheers :)

Site sponser Greg Pullman did the review, it is on his website

    FWIW I got a K3 and couldnt be happier, unless I got a K10 that is ;D

Any connection between your grinder "dieing" and the fact that you just installed some shims . ??? :-[

Uh, I hope not! I had a laugh.

Ive been looking at the k3 a little more and I dont think a step less grinder would be a good idea for myself, considering i float between plunger/filter/espresso.

    Hi Drover,
I picked up my mazzer mini doser for $400 from fleabay, we used it in our cafe until we closed, now have it at home. Great grinder and easy to adjust from plunger grind to espresso and back. Greg Pullmans article says "...the most important thing performance-wise is being able to consistently get the burr spacing right to produce the right grind, and this is where the Mazzer lands one of its biggest blows on the Compak...." and I couldnt agree more. Everything else is a matter of preference ;)

Just thought i would pop in and update. I managed to source a second hand doserless Rocky from one of the sponsors. It's only 1 year old and has had a full service etc. So lucky to have found it! Got it for $350, which is a great saving for me. I can't wait until it arrives this week!!!
