Hello CS`rs i have a K3 t and was wondering would I get an improvement in the cup (drinking short blacks ) from an upgrade to a bigger burr set like a Mazzer major or super jolly ?

Possibly someone out there has upgraded from the K3 have you noticed an improvement?
    Cheers

    Gday MNSTA,

FWIW, you will get only speed. Anything else in the cup will likely come down to you or a case of placebo effect. ;)

    Cheers

I upgraded from K3 to the SJe. For me the extra speed is a big plus and I have definitely noticed less clumping in the SJe at the finer end of the scale. This is important for me as I use VST baskets that required a finer grind. I also prefer the look of the Mazzer. To answer your question, has it really made a big difference in the cup? Probably not.

I havent moved from the touch but from a sunbeam to a super jolly and its a combination of things, my biggest thing was better tasting quality and I got that but it also looks better, last longer, is quicker and did I mention looks better.

A an indication it now takes me 20 seconds to grind for 2 double shot lattes over about double that on the sunbeam. It also less clumped and more consistent it is also a strapless getting adjustment.

did i also mention it looks better

Yup, as others have said, you basically gain speed, my SJ blows the Rocky completely out of the water on grind speed.

There is some argument that you might get *slightly* more consistent grind out of the Mazzer due to the sprung burr carrier (see Greg Pullmans comparitive review of the K3E and the Mazzer Mini http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/kb/reviews/mini-k3/) but as noted elsewhere its unlikely to make any discernable difference in the cup.

I would think the next step would be a conical, whether its a compak 10, robur, Pharos or rosco grinder ( plenty of others as well ) As previously said major and super will give you speed..

Plenty of reviews/comparisons between flat and conical burrs. ( but Im sure most people, me included couldnt tell the difference between the two initially )..

I had a mazzer mini, Mazzer Sj, compak k3, k6, and wega conik 6.8 ( rebadged compak k10 )..all at the same time, and couldnt taste the difference between them..

Im not overly knowledgeable about coffee but I knew what I wanted and I now have the wega 6.8 and I sold all the rest to friends. But in the cup they where all the same to me..

If I had mine time again, and as I only drink espresso I would have got a Rosco or Pharos hand grinder.. But i knew I occasionally I would have to make 6-8 coffees so I needed an electric grinder for speed..

    Upgraditis........ Have fun :)

I decided after the feedback I received that a large conical was the way to go, so I kept the K3 and went with a Pharos hand grinder from OE in the US,

Since then I have sold the K3 and did a side step to a mazzer mini both great grinders,

Now I have sold the mazzer (Wife was not really a fan of the doser for low volume home use) and got myself a Baratza preciso which is great

So the Baratza and pharos at home

At some stage I would like to move from the Baratza to a Mazzer major E.

Interesting call. I skipped the super fast planar grinders and have a Kony-E for home. It's well past its first time 'round the clock with 11,000 shots up and there is still nothing around which I'd think of swapping it for. Circa 7 sec double is plenty quick enough for home.

Interesting, I wonder if you considered the vario over the preciso? I have a Pharos paired with my cremina but I want an electric grinder for when I have guests, mazzer mini's look nice but I dont want a doser and i can't afford the E version. I thought about a compak touch. I'm tempted to buy an old jolly and mod it to doser less so I can compare it with my Pharos. How does your mini mazzer compare to your Pharos?
