Any ideas of where i can buy a Sunbeam EM0480 at a good price?

Do you think its a good idea to move from a Delonghi KG100 to a Sunbeam EM0480

see the thread http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1170392080/0 where im struggling to get a crema on my coffee using the KG100, on the finest grind i can get a tiny bit of a crema but thats about it (im using a gaggia cubika)

Should be a few around at the moment. *Now that I have my Mazzer, I have a spare 0480 however it isnt sellable as I believe there is a fault with the grind - it sits at the coarsest and of the scale and sometimes that is still too fine. *Mine will be going back, hopefully for a refund.

It will help if you tell us what area you can pick up from. :)

Re: Looking to trade my KG100 to EM0480

Please consider carefully, I had a EM0480 and sold it because the steps were not fine enough for espresso.
Dont forget, the best lesson Ive learned here is that the grinder is more important than the machine.
So: without going overboard and providing you can afford it of course, Ill suggest you look at the Iberital Challenge.
Our Site Sponsors can give you all the info youll need.

    Good luck.

Plenty of the site sponsors sell the Iberital Challenge. Chris (2mcm) from TalkCoffee is in Melbourne and sells them as that is who I bought mine from. So give him a pm and I am sure he will look after you for sure.

Yup either Chris (2MCM) or Luca (Veneziano) can get the Challenge for you. I got mine from Chris and have been very happy with it.

    Hi Nicholas,

Funny that you should post this because tomorrow I was going to post about an ex-demo iberital challenge that might be of interest to you. It has a crack in the hopper, but is otherwise fine. If youd like to drop by and see the grinder, we are at 26 Bond Street, Abbotsford (just off Victoria Street).

Whilst I think that the iberital is the minimum for espresso, I had a quick look at your other thread and agree with the others that stale coffee is the most likely problem. The cheapest course of action for you would be to pick up some freshly roasted coffee beans and have a play around at various settings, trying to get approximately 25mL in 25 seconds. Then youll be able to make a more informed decision as to whether your current grinder cuts it (no pun intended ;P). The other thing that I would add is that whilst crema is often a good indicator of taste, if your espresso tastes good, why would you care that the crema has faded?

    Cheers,

    Luca

    Luca,

Whilst I agree that the lack of crema may well be because of stale coffee, I dont believe Nicholas will ever get even passable results from a KG100....

Having owned one, you get grinds of various sizes (I believe because of burr movement) and a lot of "powder" is included. As you attempt to creep up on the elusive pour of 25ml/25 seconds it suddenly goes to almost no extraction at all... (and that is only after moding the grinder so you can grind finer - the "as supplied" grinder doesnt grind fine enough)

You have just hit the magic combination of grounds/powder which, after tamping, sets like a concrete block in the basket - result - no water flow.

Using one of these grinders for espresso is at best extremely hard, tending to impossible....

Getting a decent grinder makes am unbelievable difference.

    Nicholas,

Id recommend you consider Lucas grinder - or a similar one - ***very seriously***

Hi thought id wade in on the stale coffee issue.

The reason why i think its also the grinder is because i was at my dads house the other day and hes got an EM0480 with the EM6910 and it produced a beautiful cup of coffee and we have similar quality of beans.

    Hi Nicholas,

Yep, I couldnt believe just how much easier to adjust and how much better the coffee was once I got a decent grinder.....

I really do believe you are bashing your head against the wall trying to get the KG100 to perform..... (but if you like plunger coffee, they are a great grinder for that).

Probably true, but Im a big advocate of changing only one variable at a time so that you know whats going on.

    Cheers,
