Cimbali Adjustment - on or off?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I have Wushoes Cimbali grinder and I am pretty happy with it. You have to love the fine adjustment possible with the worm drive. I came across a site that said to adjust this grinder you should always have the grinder running. Has anyone heard of this before and if so what is the reason for it? I cant see that small adjustments are a problem with the power off. Maybe if you were to adjust a large amount from coarse to fine you could trap beans between the burrs and the force possible with the worm drive could damage the burrs. Any thoughts?

On or off it doesnt matter. Its just you will find it very hard adjusting any grinder off if you want to go from say espresso grind to something very coarse as the beans in between the burrs will make it almost impossible to do so.

For you Cimbali...off is fine as youre only adjusting minute amounts....

Some people also believe that adjusting while off may cause unnecessary wear on your burrs.....I guess it doesnt matter as DRM burrs for your Cimbali are cheap as....cheaper for generic stuff....and your burrs are in pretty good nick!

I hope you enjoy your grinder for a long time to come.

This is a quote from the website:

"Please note as with all coffee grinders, it is very important to only change grind settings on Cimbali coffee grinders when the unit is powered on and the burrs are in motion. If you do not do this, the burrs will gunk up and require cleaning by you every time this occurs. Changing the grind settings when the burrs are not in motion will render the grinder to only produce very coarse grinds or no grinds at all. If this result occurs, this will be considered operator error for lack of following directions, and not be classified as a defective grinder."

I have not heard this advice before and it does not seem to be a common opinion but I wondered what other thought. I know not to believe everything I read on the web!

    cjhfield....

I have always adjusted my La Cimbali grinder whilst running...... it does seem to grind more consistently when you do that (and Ive always done it because La Cimbali tell you to do it that way...

Only wastes a few beans..... I know where it should be (roughly) for each type of bean when it is say 3 days post roast..... so I can get it pretty close then just tweak from there.

    Hello,
La Cimbali tells you to adjust your grinding whilst running be course, if you adjust your grinder to a finer (smaller number) setting in the off position, there is a chance that the burrs lock in to each other with some beans between them.
To adjust to a coarser setting is never a problem in the off position .
although in all the years I worked with cimbali machines in Holland, I never encountered
a problem with adjusting in the off position. (Just donít adjust to much to a finer setting)
Maybe the coffee roaster I worked for, never had any very dark hard beans in the assortment.
    Hope this helps.
    Tony
