Do you mean Baratza Vario 885? I don't think there is a Preciso 885, at least not here in America.

Anyhow, the Vario is a very fine grinder, I use it myself.

Just buy the BES900 with the free grinder deal and use it for a while. You can then choose to upgrade the grinder at which point you'll have a decent reference point to compare.

Lelit pl053 (cheapest but agreat grinder fro the price of around $300), Rancilio Rocky (on par with the lelit, a bit more expensive), compak k3,macap m4, mazzer mini (more expensive options not sure they are under $400 really),

I dont have anything to do with brevile, and I would be interested to know what this is about? Why are you told it isnt the best? A million people reading this thread will believe this because its written here, & go away thinking the smart grinder isnt the best. I dont care either way, but can you please explain what you have been told? Isnt the best compared to what? In what context, price, performance, size, weight, shoe size?????

What if what you have been told, is bollocks (and you could be missing out on a good grinder if you let it affect your purchase without checking it out)?

Just a thought, and I hope that helps.

My thoughts are that it's really difficult to comment on gear and certainly to make comparisons unless you have both specific and broader experience of the (insert item category) which is in discussion.

The internet is laden with opinion and for mine, they are too often like commodores- with the disclaimer that many these days have never seen one and may not even recognise one....

I have had the breville smart grinder for some time now, yes in while owning one of these i have also purchased a K3 touch. Having now had both for sometime in my opinion the smart grinder is great for the price you pay. Maybe not comparable to the K3 but nether the less still a good grinder.

    Cheers,

    Chris

It would be great but i understand maybe not practical for the supplier or manufacturer of these grinders or other pieces of kit in question to have some one like Chris or Attilio on sites like this one to test these pieces of kit and give their honest assessment, provided they are covered financially for their time to do such it could be worth some thought.

Not sure these guys would put themselves in the firing line of disillusioned, disgruntled, incompetent
or otherwise angry or unhappy people who bought the above on the 'strength' of a paid endorsement.

I don't think CS sponsors are the types who would do paid endorsements of gear they don't sell
but are more the types who would stand 100% behind the gear that they do sell.

Thread is in the wrong topic heading too, we're talking grinders here not machines. Mods might move it.
If HarveyNorm is doing the deal that others have mentioned then buy your machine and walk away with a free grinder-
    no brainer really.
Plenty of time for upgraditis if your first grinder is gratis! Use it to learn as much as possible before moving on.

The title of the thread is "Which grinder should I buy for the BES900 for under $400?" and the thread is in the Grinders forum. It doesn't get much more on topic than this!

Or you could just look in 'brewing equipment 500- 1500' where you will see it marked as moved.

Ack! Looks like I either hit the wrong button or there was a glitch when I chopped the posts out of the BES900 thread ( http://coffeesnobs.com.au/brewing-eq...tml#post487023 ) yesterday and moved them to their own thread, which was supposed to be here in Grinders!
