    Any Baratza retailers in Sydney?

    I'd like to pick up a Preciso. I've already emailed the sponsors on the site via the quote form but heard nothing back.

    Or is mail order from 5 Senses really the only option?

    I just bought mine from 5 senses 2 days ago. Shipping was $20 to Brisbane and they sent it via air courier. Arrived the next day well packed! Don't think that can be beaten, especially since 5 senses are the Australian importer.

    No- they have no interest in resellers anywhere in Australia. No surprise as that's their stance on their machines as well. Closed shop and no margin allowed for those who would be interested in offering the product in other locations.

    I was beginning to think something like this might be the case. Thanks.

    The problem with mail order is the hassle of mailing it back, and the expense, if it goes wrong. After reading a review of a guy had 4 of them fail, made me think brick&mortar for this item.

    Hi Simon,

    Declaring my commercial interest, I honestly cannot see the value in these when you are about $100 away from the Compak K3P which is not an appliance grinder and will not fail.

    We have never had a defective unit. If you'd like to PM, we'll do a special deal to Sydney.

    Yes and I will add, my own company also has Macap M2 and Eureka Mignon grinders at around the same price as the K3T and we would indeed be surprised to see a single unit of any of these ever needing to be returned for any repair any time let alone a warrantable one. What this means, is there are small commercial grinders out there that are within easy reach price wise of the unit you started out looking to. The benefits of buying small commercial units are almost intangible but real, in that you can expect relatively trouble free service over an extended period of time. This is real, just that it can only be measured directly, after you have had a small commercial unit for an extended period of time !

    I have a Precisio and very happy with it so far.

    However, I would never expect a grinder to last forever. After sales service is crucial.

    Thanks for your comments.

    Money's the main issue at the moment and I should really be sticking with the Porlex hand grinder. It's just taking too long and I've nearly worn the handle out in two weeks. Another $100-$150 for the K3, more for a small hopper, then only a bit more for Mignon, then only a bit more for xxx, it could go on and on I guess.

    Plus some other things that attracted me about the Preciso:

    Size: I like my bench space and lack of clutter. The Mignon is ok, but the K3 is getting too substantial.
    Grinding bin: Wife would freak out at the thought of grounds missing the basket
    Stepped: Change between espresso and press grinds morning/night

    Wasn't there someone on here who had their whole unit replaced when a clip broke? Seems like decent service to me.

    From what I've seen on the American forums, Baratza are highly praised for their customer service--I'd assume they'd want to carry that image here too.

    Still, sending something back by mail is still a hassle compared to dropping it off next time you pass by a store.

    That's a very interesting comment Simon and I think we all have to able to discern between legitimate feedback posts placed into forums by any number real individual clients about the great treatment they received from traders and brands, and the seemingly high number of posts placed into forums by a very very small number of people, inflating the image of their pet brand and its level of service to a much much "bigger & better" position in the eyes of the viewing public, than the reality may actually be......

    Besides, others are also highly praised for their customer service as well as the quality of their grinders, but the odds are, that if you spend that little bit extra and buy a real small commercial grinder the likes of which have been mentioned above already, you probably wont need any customer service for a period of years. For your money, you get very sturdy, reliable, long lived, quality grinding equipment that usually only requires service if its dropped on the floor.

    Then you have the added worry about damage during shipping. Small commercial grinders shouldnt require any more than a one way trip because as already explained it would be highly unusual for them to ever have to go back...... Most traders will use commercial couriers for shipping, and there is a topic in here called something like "I hate shippers" or transprt companies or whatever... If you can find it, it will make interesting reading for you, and note those companies are "the best" (or perhaps the only ones besides Ozzy Post) at what they do.

    On the other hand retail end clients usually dont have an account with a courier company and in the main will send stuff back by using Ozzy Post. If you ask yourself why not many traders use Ozzy Post and instead opt to use the courier companies, you will get the drift about not wanting to send packages around the country willy nilly for "service". Buy once, buy right, and dont send it anywhere...

    Anyway its your money and you have to do what is best for you. If we can help, just let us know.

    Must say I agree with Attilio's comments. Anything that Baratza does in America has no relevance whatsoever in Australia.

    The model adopted by the current mob guarantees maximum margin as it"s a closed market with zero competition. They're not wearing a white hat by any means- on this nor their other brands.

    Yeah I will, thanks. Normally money and bench space aren't issues (although neat freak wife always is) so I have the entire range of grinders to choose from, right now it would just be irresponsible. It's not just a little bit extra though, it's 50% extra for the next step up K3P with the small hopper, and I've already irresponsibly jumped up 50% from the Smart Grinder! . I can only handle a certain amount of irresponsibility.

    I appreciate what you say about the commercial appliances going on forever, but that comes at a cost when indeed longevity is not a primary concern. DOA or major issues during warranty are annoying but after that, it's no big deal if parts are easily available and reasonably priced, as they seem to be for the Preciso.

    I only new to the coffee world, so please forgive my confusion, but the Preciso has many retailers in the States. The best price there seems to be around $299. For Five Senses to offer in Australia at $330 with the much lower demand here is a welcome relief to what we normally see in Australia, especially for something that would require the motor and PCB to be made 240V. Their other items don't concern me, but if that's maximum margin for the Preciso, I'm fine with it.

    Not sure if you've seen this review of the Baratza before? CoffeeGeek - Baratza Virtuoso Preciso
    Note it sounds like it was commissioned by Baratza but gives a good walk-through. The comment in the negatives section regarding heat generated during grinding needs to be noted.

    I'm not familiar with the Baratza unit but as an owner can vouch for the "industrial" build quality of the Compak K3. Unless you feed it rocks, it should give excellent service for a hell of a long time! You get a lot of grinder for your money. Also, you'd be hard pushed to get better service than Chris of Talk Coffee will offer you.

    Hi CafeLotta, yes I had read that article (and noted the affiliation), thanks. I thought the speed of the grind was a worthwhile trade-off here. Intuitively I feel the heat generated in a 10 second espresso grind won't be enough for my undeveloped palate to notice and I didn't come across any paper discussing how much heating is too much when I looked into it. But I definitely appreciate the grind taking half the time of many other entry level grinders. Bigger burrs would be of course nice, but again it all comes at cost.

    I probably won't be allowed to keep the grinder on the countertop anyway and the fridge needs some populating, so I'll just keep the grinder in the there to precool the burrs if some trials show temperature to be a problem. Another bonus for its small footprint and height!
