    mini mazzer burrs

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,
How can you tell if the burrs need replacing? When it takes a while to grind or inconsistent grind? The burrs feels sharp but seems slow getting the volumn out, so I'm not sure......my first experience with a mazzer.
    Thanks!

    Hi Franjae
How old is the machine, and have you had it since new? I have a Macap which is similar, and they say a couple of hundred kg's (4-5 years home use?). If they feel sharp, should be no prob.
Could it also be the grind? I find that a fine grind takes a lot longer to come out, and will clump more - you could try a coarser grind and slightly harder tamp and see if it changes anything?

    I wouldn't go on time alone though… ;-)

    G'day Franjae,

Keep in mind that the Mazzer Mini ain't exactly the fastest grinder on the block.

I've had a Mini for a couple of years, takes approx 30 seconds to grind 18 grams for espresso, this figure may give you a idea of how yours is performing.

Mazzer rate Mini burrs as being good for 300kg, and suggest replacement at half the rated life, therefore 150kg. (Jolly burrs are rated at 400kg, Major at 600kg.)

Thanks for the replies guys. Bought the grinder secondhand, so no idea what life its had, but overall condition is good. By the sounds of what you guys have said, it is probably normal then. I'm just used to my Rocky being quicker ...... and a lot less messy, hahaha! So far, I'm not sure if it is much of an upgrade!

I can assure you it's a massive upgrade from the ever reliable Rocky.

Once you work with it for a while you will learn how to control the "mess" a quick wipe down/sweep of the bench after each session keeps things nice and clean for me.

    Absolutely!

I would agree with Yelta and I would replace the burrs anyway as they're cheap, easy to install and the difference is worth it! Get them from a site sponsor through Bombora as they sell genuine mazzer. A few other online "specialist coffee suppliers" sell non genuine burrs without telling you beforehand. To add insult to injury, they charge the same for them but the product is not as good.

Agree with CoffeeBloke, non genuine burrs are rubbish.

Unknowingly bought a set for the Rocky many years ago, lasted me under 6 months, replaced them with a set of Mazzer burrs from Jetblack, they were still fine when I sold the grinder 3years later.
