Grinder for Silvia V3, rocky, mazzer mini etc.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

My first post here, but I have been reading bits and pieces over the last year or so.

I bought a Silvia V3 about a year or so ago which has been a brilliant machine. From memory I bought it after reading some good posts here.

I have just ordered an Auber PID, still yet to arrive but should be here in the next week or so (funnily enough I'm a control systems engineer, but the Auber package looked like it was well enough put together to save me the effort of doing it myself!)

I have been grinding with a department store "Krups" burr grinder, which has been reasonable, but not much fine adjustment, and hence I am looking to upgrade. It is able to choke the machine one the finer grind sttings (haven't yet tried the finest) and I am a few notches up depending on the bean.

I've been looking at options such as the Rocky, Macap M4 and Mazzer Mini. I'm probably looking to limit my budget to around $700, and have been leaning towards the Mazzer Mini Manual. I don't like the idea of paying heaps more for the doserless versions which just add some ridiculous electronics. In terms of electronic timers and such, I would prefer a simple on-off machine. As I mentioned, I am a control engineer, so would be whipping up my own electronic timer unit, and if it has a timer, setting this to a longer period than I intend to use (i.e. the egg style timer).

I am not really committed to doser/doserless, however I generally make 1-2 double shots at a time, occasionally up to 4 if we have guests around. I buy fresh roasted coffee from a variety of places, after coming to the realisation that store bought beans are terrible...

Am I better off buying a rocky, and doing a big upgrade later on when I can afford more (i.e. machine and grinder)?

Anyway, just looking for some opinions from people who have been in a similar situation on which way too go.

Welcome nicovington, and great first post.

As with most things, buy the best you can afford.

All those grinders you mentioned are great for Miss Silvia. The Macap and Mazzar provides a better grind than the Rocky.

You may want to consider the Compak K3 Touch too. It is a grind on demand grinder with switchable dosage or manual. Is priced well. Grind quality similar to Mazzar and Macap.

Compared to the Krups grinder, they produce even sized particles which is the key to great espresso.

I have to second the Compak K3 touch, it is a cheaper option to the Mazzer. Many will say on here it would be an upgrade from a K3 to a mazzer more of a sidestep. Its comes down i guess to cosmetic appearance. I own a K3 and have been happy since day one and cant fault it, not to mention the price difference of this to the equivalent in the mazzer.

    Regards,

    Chris

    Definitely some food for thought!

If there is no significant advantage going the Mazzer Mini over the Compak, then it's no question given the $$$ difference between the two.

Also, I like the grind on demand idea rather than a doser, as mentioned, I generally make only two doubles at a time unless there are guests around, so 95% of the usage will be one or two coffee's at a time.

Now, I'm given to believe that the TOUCH and PUSH are identical apart from the timer. The timer function appeared to be set by a potentiometer as on one of the Mazzer Mini electrics, which I would absolutely hate.

I have about 75% of the parts to build a proper electronic timer, and can easily add in functions like total grind time etc for that etc bling.

So, if I dont need the timer, is there any reason not to go the K3 Push?

    Regards,
    Nic

Sounds like you could build a better timer than what is found on the touch, so no reason not to get the push, they are the same except for the timer.

    Just an update:

I ended up going the K3 Push from one of the sponsors for a reasonable price. Very happy with is so far (but only made one cup after dialing it in fairly close)

I also installed an Auber PID, first few shots while dialing in the grinder were a bit sour, but dropped the SV a bit and tastes better than anything I've had from the machine once I got the grind much closer.

I do wish I'd just done the PID first rather than changing two things at once.

When I end up making the timer I will post a build thread if I can remember to take photos etc throughout the process.

I think an interesting build would be a controller that grinds based on weight straight into a basket

    Cheers,
    Nic

    Hi Nic,

Congratulations on getting a great grinder, I've had the K3 push for almost two years and love it. It works well with my Strega.

I'd be interested in hearing more about a controller that works on the weight of coffee as it would save me a lot of stuffing around. My K3 grinds 18 grams in about 19 seconds but it can vary from day to day.

    Cheers,
    Dave
