    KG100 modification

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hey Guys, interested in some opinions on the following:

I recently upgraded my Breville 800 to a EM6910. I modified my Delonghi KG100 conical burr grinder so it could grind finer by 2 incriments. With good fresh beans I am consistently getting 30 - 40 second honey like pours that i am very happy with - way better than i could ever get on my old breville

Problem?: i have just noticed that when i run the grinder with no beans and turn the adjustment i can hear faint metal on metal sound only when i get into my 2 extra increments - it gets louder as i adjust finer. Is it normal for empty grinders to make this sound on their finest settings or are my burrs paying a high price for good shots....

for some beans (like decaf) it feels like i cannot currently grind fine enough so i am considering modifying kg100 by another 2 increments - but i am a bit scared ill start a fire or completly wreck my grind...

    Sink cut

    Hi and welcome to CoffeeSnobs

A KG100 isnt really up to espresso grinding (mine has long since been retired to plunger only use....) and it was modded prior to retirement.

The burrs arent fixed firmly in place and move.... and modding it makes these movements more of a problem - the burrs touch - hence the metal on metal noise.... they also produce lots of dust or very fine grinds.... wrecking your extractions.

Basically you need a real espresso grinder - these grinders are only suitable for machines with pressurised baskets- at best .... not real espresso machines.

A good grinder is FAR more important than the espresso machine when it comes to quality coffee... the minimum would be a EM480.... but they have reliability issues.... Id be looking at an Iberital or a Rocky to match your machine (as a minimum).

Thanks Smokey... I have had the iberital challenge in the back of my mind.. but if i am already getting 30-40 second pours do you think an iberital will make a real difference to the final product?

Also, with my metal on metal issue; I suspect (but dont know for sure) that when i have beans running through they are stopping this from happening..??

    Thanks

    Sink cut,

With the beans it does reduce it to some extent..... but all beans arent created equal - some being harder than others.... so this causes the burrs to wobble about and affects the evenness of the grind.....

You might get reasonable results for a while but the burrs are being slowly machined, the grind adjustment is far too coarse for good espresso extraction (tracking the beans as they age)...... and even if you get the correct extraction time - some of the particles will be very fine - others the correct size.... the small ones get over extracted and the big particles probably wont be extracted enough.... resulting in less than ideal taste.

For the best espresso all particles should be more or less the same size. Grab a pinch of your ground coffee and rub it gently in the palm of your hand..... is it like grains of salt - pretty uniform - or is there quite a bit of powder and varying size particles (which Im sure you will find).... This WILL affect the taste of the espresso.

I keep my KG100 at work with my Sunbeam Ristretto with its pressurised baskets - I modded it too. Sure beats instant!!!
