Grinder Noise - EM480 vs Compak K3/Mazzer Mini

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi all, Looking to upgrade my grinder from the trusty old EM480. Whilst I am looking for improvements in the coffee, a big part of it is the noise. The EM480 sounds like a blender full of bolts in my open plan kitchen and my 2 yr old hates it. It's also a real conversion killer!

I'm looking at the likes of the Compak K3 and Mazzer Mini (used) (doserless variants) and am just wondering if anyone had used both and could comment on the relative noise level?

Can't comment on the k3 but I remember the 440 I had and it was really loud compared to the Macap mXA and the Mazzer super jolly I had.

And also alot messier too as grinds just literally fly everywhere and stick to anything even when I had the portafilter right up to the nozzle.

I just upgraded from the 460 (more plastic version) to the Mazzer Mini last week. I dont regret the spend at all. The Mini is a serious piece of gear, works a charm. I took off the finger guard and did the sweep mod and also the inverted cup mod and it is perfect now!

I actually changed my doser to doserless. I find single dosing so much easier for me compare to doser. Even after doing the doser mod and the doser outlet nozzle.

However, when making alot of coffee at once, having the doser is very handy.

    Hi Mrjack,

I have owned both a K3 and Mazzer mini,

Running the grinders empty the mini is near silent, the K3 a bit noiser

When grinding beans I would say there is not much in it,

    Both great grinders.

You will find the Mazzer more child friendly- they are of similar volume, but the mazzer is of lower pitch
