Rocky, grind retention !
I have been happily using Rocky for several years, most recently just loading a weighed dose of beans into the hopper and grinding until empty.
Checks have indicated that 21 gms of beans in resulted in 21gms of grinds in the basket...Great !
But, having just gone through a manual strip down clean ( as opposed to the normal brush, poke and vacuum job),.. i was surprised at the amount of trapped grinds in various places. In particular the "sweep" and the discharge port of the grind chamber.
In total there was over 8gms of grinds inside that "empty" grind chamber (yes, i weighed them !), and of that i estimate 3-4 gms were trapped in the discharge area and sweep section ( ie these were grinds that would get ejected first when the next dose was ground).
The rest were lodged in places that held them until the next major clean (jammed in corners and groves , etc).
After reassembly of the fully clean machine, a weighed 17gm dose of beans was processed and resulted in 12gms of grinds !
..5gms of retention !
I had never imagined that my first 20gm shot of the day contained 3-5 gms of 12+ hours old grinds !
In order to remove the bulk of those grinds lodged in the sweep/discharge area, you have to vacuum the machine out...you cannot reach with a brush of any sort.
What happened to those "pumper" lids for the Rocky hoppers ?
Maybe someone else will be getting the first shot of the day in future !
Is the pumper lid your talking about the click-clack canister lid? I'm also keen to find a neat solution, after discovering the current click-clack range is a touch smaller in diameter so no longer fits the Rocky hopper. Discovered this shortly after acquiring my Rocky just recently. Haven't found any alternatives yet (apart from the ziplock sandwich bag) but keep planning to check out a few op shops in case they have some old school canisters kicking around.
Im not at all sure the "Click clack" pumper lid will shift much of those grinds in the sweep/discharge area.
If you take off the doser spout and look at the narrow port and the rubber "bridge" piece , you will realize how easy it is for grinds to hang in there.
Maybe grind the first 5g into the p/f then bin? But only if you're really worried
My grinder retains about 30-40g I reckon - I'm just learning to live with it! A small amount of 1/2 day old coffee hasn't killed me yet… yes there is a fraction less crema … first world problem I guess!
Most of it is caked on and doesn't find its way into the portafilter, what I'm trying to say is that when your grinding a tiny amount accumulates and doesn't find its way into the doser, 99.9% of what your getting in the PF will be freshly ground.
Regardless, regular cleaning with a small brush, as in weekly, will dramatically reduce the build up, and, of course improve the flow through the delivery chute.
Remove the burr carrier and clean the grinding chamber every 6 weeks or so.
Yep, I owned a Rocky for almost 10 years.
Yelta, what i am seeing is a "loose plug" of a few grams of grinds staying in the discharge port between the sweep and the plastic external spout. (this is a doserless) . It just sits there at the end of the grind until the next dose pushes it out.

Can you brush it out with a small flat paint brush?
No way. you cannot get near that area without either removing the upper burr carrier, or removing the plastic discharge spout (easier)
Just checked out a photo of a Rocky, see what you mean, mine was a doser.
Wonder if a modification could be done to the discharge chute, hinge from the top to allow easy access, just a thought.
Yes , any thing is possible i guess, but that discharge port is narrow (8mm?) , about 20mm long and horizontal to the side of the casing with several "Ribs in it to hold things back ( a pretty poor design in retrospect !).
Thinking about it, you are most likely going to throw away those sweepings, so i may as well just wait and dump the first 5gms or so of the morning grind anyway. !
This is what I do - purge 3-4 grams each morning before grinding into my PF. There is a lot of retention overall, but as Yelta said, very little if any of that makes it into the PF. Just grind out the stuff left in the chute and you'll get a completely fresh grind.
