    grind size breville smart grinder and EM6910

    I hope this is the right spot to post. Still new to this.

    I have a Sunbeam EM6910 I just had it serviced as the steam arm was dodgy.

    I am having a lot of trouble getting a good crema on my shots

    My Breville Smart Grinder is set to grind size 9 and grind time 9.8.

    I have been tamping very firmly mid grind at at the end.

    I am sure it is me and not the machine but just wondering if anyone who is using this machine combo with success what settings is your grinder on?

    If I can get a base setting maybe I can play a bit with it from there.

    Not tamping 'mid grind' is probably best. A simple shake to settle grounds is all that's required. I have found around 9 secs will give around 8-9 grams of coffee. For a double shot, decide how much coffee you want to use, between 14g and 20g is what most people can squeeze in. I started out by grinding for however many seconds, then weighing it. After that I roughly knew how much I was going to get after a certain time.

    Im sure many will agree that keeping your dose and tamp exactly the same will rule out many variables. Then just grind finer or courser to get 'around' 60mL of espresso in 'around' 30 seconds. Anywhere between a grind size of 12 and 1 should suffice, but depends on beans, etc. Keep in mind, the finer you grind, the less that will come out of the grinder in the selected time. Buying some scales which are accurate to 0.1 g is the best way to stay consistent. Once my dosing remained the same, I knew I could forget about it and concentrate on grind adjustments.

    Often poor crema is old beans. What are you brewing with?
