Kony E dose variation
I've had a Kony E for a little while and I finally found myself with some old beans to test the variability of the electronic dosing. There's nothing new here that hasn't been said before, I just wanted to try it myself.
And just to avoid the trolls, I'm not making any suggestions whatsoever on whether the variance in dose makes a significant difference in the cup.
I started the hopper with ~700g of CoffeeSnobs Espresso Wow and the timer was set to 6.3 seconds.
Here are two charts, showing exactly the same data, but the first chart uses the old head and shoulders trick to make it seem like there's more variability than there actually is.
A few observations:
In summary, each dose is fairly random within a 1.5g range.
Although the hopper started with 700g and went down to zero, other than for the last 50g (not charted but in the table below) I couldn't see any difference in dose between a full and fairly empty hopper (this was my biggest surprise).
Indeed with just 73g in the hopper, it still pumped out a dose of 20.5g, just slightly less than average.
Based on visual inspection there doesn't seem to be any obvious trends to explain abnormally high or low doses.
Some basic stats, ignoring the last few doses:
Mean - 21.76g
Median - 21.85g
StDev - 0.44g
Min - 20.8g
Max - 22.5g
Here's the raw data -
Dose Weight in hopper
(The last dose of 14g was an un-timed dose using a paintbrush to get as much as possible out of the machine)
Looks pretty good to me! Found a similar result in the robust - not micro perfect but pretty darn reliable and repeatable. Happy to live with that
I found similar results with the Mini Electronic.
