Compak k3 - clumping & silicone flap
I'm experiencing some bad clumping with my 2009 Compak k3, I think it may be something to do with the silicone flap on the exit chute.
I found out when giving it a good clean that my grinder was missing this piece (I bought it second hand), and assumed that was the reason for the clumps.
So I made one out of a silicone jar seal ring, however I'm still experiencing major clumping with it installed
So, perhaps you can help - does anyone know the proper dimensions of the silicone flap at the exit chute? Does it cover up the whole chute?
At the moment, I can see the coffee grinds bunching up in the chute and getting pushed out as new grounds are made, and the coffee just plops out all clumpy.
Could there be any other reason for the clumping? Perhaps I should buy a genuine Compak piece?
Did you put a vertical slit in the silicone or is it just a solid piece? I remember it having a slit with maybe 2mm gap and quite a bit of play in it, so as to let the grounds come out in a controlled manner and the rubber reduced the static charge.

I'm also experiencing substantial clumping with the same grinder and am curious to see if anyone can come up with a solution. My k3 is also missing the silicon flap. However I still had a concerning amount of clumping when the flap was there. The clumping doesn't affect the standard of my shots from snobs beans that I roast myself on a Gene Cafe but the amount of mess spraying all over the place does my head in at times.
I have opened up and cleaned the burrs and this has improved the situation a bit. Grinding coarser also helps but results in gushers and weak coffee. I know this topic has been dealt with on the forum before but would be grateful if anyone can come up with any suggestions that will stop me getting ear bashed about the amount of grinds all over the bench! My k3 touch is 3 years old and I estimate about 45kgs of beans have gone through it. Is a service necessary or would Grindz solve the problem?
A little confused as to which problem you are trying to solve. You seem to be happy enough re the clumping, and are more worried about the mess factor.....makes sense (but your first sentence still seems to suggest that you want a solution to 'clumping'). For the mess, how about either an Orphan Espresso coffee funnel (about USD30), a Coffee Catcha, or a home-made variant? I've use the OE funnel for years, both with the K3 and other grinders. It is simple and works quite well for me. Once you've dosed the coffee, if worried by the clumps, they can be broken up with a toothpick (dental floss doesn't work).
Thanks for the info. I've only been able to find one photo of the piece online (via a US website Chris Coffee) and it does look like it has a cut in it running vertically up the middle.

Similar to Stephen, if I go coarser then that does help the clumping, but then I get gushers. My grind is spot-on right now, and I've fully cleaned my grinder apart from removing the bottom burr.
I removed the rubber flap in mine. No noticeable difference in clumping and noticeably more stray grinds on the bench. After a few months I replaced it.
From memory the rubber flap sits on an angle (top towards the burrs) and the slot is for the entire height of the flap in the chute. Where it mounts it is solid.
Thanks for the reply Barry, sorry for the confusion. Yes the mess is my main concern not the actual clumps affecting taste or pour. However i do feel that the mess is caused by the clumping, so alleviating that would be great. I have heard of the coffee catcha and home made remedies using milk containers etc but not the OE funnel. Will do some research on it and where to get one. Thanks for the tip.

just something to check.
a short PF funnel eliminated most of the mess on mine.....even with the flap removed.
Nope all appears good with the exit chute. Does anyone know of a local supplier of the Orphan Espresso funnel or can it only be ordered from overseas. None of the site sponsors appear to stock it.
I have some shipping from OE next week.
Cut my silicon flap up the middle (so it's essentially two flaps) - didn't help the clumping at all.
Would anything else be causing the clumping which I should look at?

I had one a while back. It was a clump monster. I ground into a glass then broke up the clumps with a chopstick. Try it
