Em480 now not grinding fine enough

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Ok. So I've used this grinder for a few years and never had issues with grinding fine enough. Prob grind 4 or 5 from the end.
Bought two separate batches of beans from different roasters and now every pour seems to be around 20 seconds on the finest setting.
initially I thought stale beans, then went and got a batch roasted 8 days ago. Same.
could it be the summer heat changing things I wonder?
maybe it's the fact I cleaned the grinder recently and haven't re seated the burr properly. I did have another go at putting it together today, and still the same pour.

im getting a new grinder, but till then I'm interested to know what could have caused this?

Well you've said yourself it's a few years old, so the burrs are probably blunt.

    G'day tobeanornottobean

... as you like it finer, I suggest you also consider the fact that 480 burrs can be located in two ways. If it happened suddenly (as it seems) then you either didn't locate them properly or you fluked getting them in the other way. 480 burrs take quite a while / lots of coffee run in, and a lot more to lose their sharpness (over 100 Kg I suspect from the two I had). They do not run in symmetrically very often. Even when they noticeably scuff up the particle spread is usually still good.

My suggestion, mark the "non active" part of the burrs to get a directional fix (I used a marking pen) and then try them both ways. If it is still a fail, then try shimming them before trying new burrs.

    Cheers Brevillista & TampIt.

ill try your suggestion TampIt and hope that sorts things out. While I've owned it for maybe 4 years, it only does 250 a week and sat still for 1 of those years

    Dear tobeanornottabean,
Simple solution to your dilemma, rush out and purchase your planned new grinder, package up you faulty Sunbeam and post it off to me for a profit of $50.00 including postage to 3690.Give it some thought as I'm prepared to wait the changeover of grinders.
    Cheers,
    Mick.
