    Mazzer major needing volume?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey guys

Just trying to figure out if a major a suitable for home use. A few things, space isn't an issue as I have a dedicated trolley, so height or space is not an issue.

I want a doser less auto grinder which is reasonably fast (around 10 sec or less for a double
My my main question about the major is, does it need constant use to function well (i.e. Needing volume cafe use to work as it should). I intend on using it for roughly 3-4 doubles a day, sometimes more (occasionally making 4-6 coffees).

Im award it will retain more grinds due to its larger burr size, but will it be an issue to just have intermittent use throughout the day?

I have located some near new (sub 1000 shots) mazzer grinders for around $1200, so I'm thinking it's great value.

    Intersted to hear some thoughts.

    Cheers

    chris

    Hi Chris,

Whilst it will do the job, it's designed for a busy cafe so when ported to home use there will be compromises such as retention. For some, that's an issue. For others, it's not.

I'd be recommending a Macap M4D or equivalent (Mazzer SJ-E, Compak E5OD- when it arrives) to meet your brief.

    Cheers

Thanks Chris. So beyond it retaining more grinds than a SJ (I'm guessing an extra 3 or so grams max?), that effectively is the only draw back? I'm just figuring out which way to go, as for $1200 it's comparable to a SJ-E in price and will grind faster, which is a benefit I guess.

Chris, would you suggest it more wise that I'm best to wait for a SJ-E to come up on the 2nd hand market as its more suited to domestic use? Iv considered the Macap m4d, but I don't love the aesthetics of the unit or the plastic looking casing. I'm steering towards the traditional mazzer style or a ECM Automatik 64 / Profitec T64 style.

I'm in no great rush so I guess I can just see what turns up, however the major @$1200 is decent buying, but I guess if it's not suitable it's not much good really.
