Gaggia MDF - How to remove doser vanes to modify

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
No big news that the Gaggia MDF doser doesnt sweep too cleanly and I dont leaving stale grounds behind only to be swept into the next days cup of coffee. Ive read a little about modifying the vanes with tape so that it sweeps more cleanly, and Ive also read somewhere you could use the velcro tape. How do you remove the actual vane itself from the doser unit to do the mods?

I know how to remove the bean hopper and the metal bit with the Gaggia name on it. The vane seems to be pretty tightly connected to the lever unit and I was wondering if to remove the vanes, you need to remove the 4 screws at the bottom of the grinder or does it just pop off from the top?

I must be the only person who doesnt have this issue with my MDF. What I do after I have ground the coffe though is to tilt the grinder forward a little and give it a wee tap or two on the base and this dislodges any coffee.

    Gday,

I disassembled my MDF several times, so I think I can help you on this one.

To remove the doser you need to flip your grinder upside-down and remove the two screws that hold the doser in place. They are placed directly under the doser but are positioned in a way that it might be hard to unscrew them. This is because the PF fork blocks the way, so you might want to remove the fork also. Unfortunately to do that you need to unscrew the whole bottom plate, because the fork is connected with it. But this also might be tricky because the four screws that hold the plate have weird star shaped heads and so you might need a special screwdriver for that...

Anyway after you unscrew the two screws that hold the doser, you need to remove the doser handle simply by pulling it off perpendicularly to the axis of the handle. Without it you will be able to pull the doser up and off the grinder. To disassemble the whole thing you need to unscrew the screw at the bottom, remove the spring and you are done:)

Hope this helps and that you understood at least a part of it:)

    Cheers,
    dsc.

Re: Gaggia MDF - How to remove doser vanes to modi

Thanks for the tips. Ill keep this one for future reference. All I wanted to do at this stage was to remove the vanes so I can stick some tape on it so it will sweep more cleanly. I managed to do that without removing the vanes but it required a lot of patience, a tweezer/ long nosed plier and a good torchlight. Now it sweeps really cleanly but I cant do much about the grinds that stay in the chute.

Is it possible to remove the doser completely? ie to make it doserless (like a Rocky, etc)

    Gday,

you can remove the doser but because of the shape of the case its hard or even impossible to make it doserless. Check out my old thread when I tried to build a new case for the MDF but unfortunately failed:

Just be aware that if you make any modifications you will void the warranty - not a good idea.

NTE, Like I posted before just tilt the grinder forward a little and give a wee tap or two and this will dislodge any grounds.

I wasnt looking to remove the whole doser, just the vanes so I can attach sticky tape more precisely so that it sweeps more cleanly.

DSC, to remove the vanes, do you need to remove the 4 screws at the bottom with the funny 6 sided star shape type?

    Gday,

you could try to unscrew those two screws that hold the doser, but its damn hard because of the PF fork. Its much easier to do with the fork out of the way but for that you need to unscrew the whole bottom plate. And yes you need to remove the 4 "funny 6 sided star shape type" screws to do that:)

    Cheers,
