    New EM0480 - not working?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey All,

This is my first foray into grinding my own coffee and so far it hasnt been going so well.

I bought a Sunbeam EM0480 this evening, plugged it all in, emptied some beans in the hopper, hit the button, motors spinning.... nothing coming out of the shute :(

I pulled the top of it all apart and gave the burrs a really good clean, lined it all up again... nothing :(

If I turn the adjustment right around anti-clockwise (coarser) off the dial, it starts spitting out coffee.. but if I try and set it to 12, or even 20, it just stops grinding.

I repeated the whole process 3 or 4 times... at least Im becoming an expert at cleaning the darn thing.

So at this stage, unless anyone can offer a solution that would want me to think about taking it out of the box (and possibly cleaning the whole lot again), I will probably take the unit back to where I bought it for a refund (that was their last unit).

    cheers

Does not sound right... If the hopper is not on correctly, it will not turn on or grind. The lower numbers the finer the grind.

When you say Stops Grinding Does it stop spinning or is that nothing comes out ?

    What sort of beans ?

Sorry, but it does not make sense and I would take it back and get them to try it. But I guess it also depends on where you got it.

    Keep us informed.

Thanks for the reply... when I say stops grinding, I mean nothing is coming out. The motor is spinning, and its only when I move the settings "off the scale" so to speak (higher than the max) then coffee starts coming out. Once I move the arrow back on the scale, the motor is still spinning but no coffee. Removing the hopper reveals partly crushed beans just sitting on top of the burr.

I bought it from Good Guys so I guess it shouldnt be too hard to return, although they said this was their last one in stock (at that store). Perhaps this is a sign to just spend a bit extra and get something a little more robust from the beginning.

The beans are just Vittoria brand, the type that come in the vacuum sealed packs, nothing fancy.

Its enought to make a tea drinker out of someone... well perhaps not quite :P

My first thought is the same "Get it replaced" however as to "something a little more robust" then the $ difference could well be a substantial increase.

The EM0480 is a great grinder, all be it when working, and I know that may sound strange with your experience at present. However for the price and for most of the smaller coffee machines around, it is an ideal unit.

I am sure that HD would refund or replace as the fault could be very easily reproduced.

If I could say one thing, get your beans from some where other that the supermarket. Even some of the local coffee shops sell their suppliers beans or package their own if you can access a roaster close by. I have has supermarket beans that have been so stale and soft that they have clogged my previous KG100 grinder, and it was the beans not the grinder.

Let us know how you go.

Re: New EM0480 - not working?

Update: I returned it today and they will have a replacement in on Monday or Tuesday. Actually it could work out ok since the one I got was the floor stock, so at least Ill end up with a brand spanker. In the meantime Ill grab myself some new beans to eliminate one possible cause.

Also when showing the machine to the sales guy, I did notice that when replacing the top part of the burr, the alignment marks didnt quite line up. I dont know if this means anything though.

From everything Ive read about this grinder its a great product for the price, so Im sure this was just a one off. Ill let you all know how the replacement goes, and thanks for all the helpful replies.

BTW I got it for $175 cash if anyone is interested.

    cheers

This is good, as I understand that the later ones do have some very slight improvements.

Ignore the cause, the fresh beans will give you a much better result as well

If you mean, out my a couple of mm then so is mine, if 180 out then wrong. Take a pic of ya new one or draw a pic as it will help.

Re: New EM0480 - not working?

    Update:

I picked up the new grinder yesterday, along with some fresh beans, and its all working ok!

It certainly lives up to its reputation of producing a fine grind - I started mid way (10) and found it was too fine, went all the way to 20 and a little too course, so Im slowly zoning in on the right grind at around 14 - 16.

As for differences between this one and the last one I had, I noticed the lid to the hopper has a stainless still cover (Im pretty sure the last one was black only). And it looks like the little protection hood in the bean hopper sits a bit higher than the last one, but I could be mistaken about that one.

Sambo can you or anyone else confirm that there are real changes to your new 480. What about, more importantly, internal changes?

I am waiting for my free promo 480 to be delivered and it would be wonderful if it was a mythical revsion 2 version with some of the bugs sorted out.

    Cheers

Some internal changes would be quite necessary to rectify the ongoing problems the 0480 has........ although having said that after modifying mine its still working very well....... Ray

A couple of questions about getting the grinder replaced: have folks taken it back to the retailer or contacted Sunbeam? If the later, how has the change-over happened - did they mail a replacement or was it through their repair agent?
Secondly, Im wondering how folks are going to prove a warranty on the free grinder if theres no receipt for it?

Re: New EM0480 - not working?

Ive tried my em0480 today. It works really well. Im really impressed with it. I figured out that the courseness of the grind is totally depended on how fresh the beans are. I bought some fresh bean from Veneziano and some bean from supermarket. What ive found is that the Venezianos bean need a courser grind while the supermarket bean need a finer grind.

Ive set my grind for Venezianos bean at 18 at the moment. And it works very very well. Hell lot better than the KG100. I can get 30mls in 30secs. Found out that 17 need a lighter tamp otherwise the shot comes out a little bit slow. I found 15-16 is too fine for fresh bean. It chokes the machine (the indicator went to the red zone). So I think 18 and harder tamp work the best.

I post the PIC of my em0480 here. I got it from the free promo. Any different from what u guys have?

You can install the Power Toy from Microsoft called Image Resizer. Its free.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Then you can right-click on any image and shrink it to the size you need.

Some of the other Power Toys are pretty handy too.

Or open a Photobucket account and upload your pics.
You can resize them there and then use them in your posts.

Re: New EM0480 - not working?

I am on my second free grinder through the promotion and I think it is having the same problem as the first one, with the normal filter on any grind setting the ground coffee is too fine to let any water through. *This is the new version with the shiny lid on the hopper.

This is really frustrating because until the grinder arrived I was using Vittoria ground coffee from the supermarket with the dual floor filters and was just getting used to my new EM6910 making better coffee than I have been paying a few bucks for in the city with not too much trial and error, now I have my grinder and all I have been able to do is waste beans and have to pull apart and clean the superfine coffee out of the grinder a million times. *Its like I have taken a giant leap from filthy instant coffee and since getting my grinder I have gone backwards. * I am now considering getting a decent hand grinder instead. *I will have to take it back again for another replacement, maybe it will be third time lucky.

Ironman what beans are you using?

Vittoria or any supermarket beans are going to be stale. You need to get to a roaster and pick up some fresh beans.

    That may help.

Where are you ? I am on the north side of Brisbane and willing to visit if need be (goes for any one with EM6910 or EM0480 probs)

Please confirm what you mean by "normal filter"

    Feel free to PM me.

Re: New EM0480 - not working?

    All fixed!!!

I was using pre ground Vittoria from the supermarket with the dual floor filters, eagerly anticipating the free EM0480 from the promotion with the EM6910, it gave me time to learn how to steam milk properly at least. Now I am using Merlo Beans that I can now grind and use the single floor filter with the weird plastic thing removed from under the filter (sorry about the terminology). I am keen to get some East Timor beans, although the coffee will not be the same without the company.

Sunbeam got back to me after I left a message on their website support area, after asking for a batch number of the grinder they called back today and told me how to remove the bottom burr and to remove one or two of the 3 spacers/washers under the burr and hang on to them in case I need them later, now with the EM0480 grinder set to 10 I am getting a proper coffee shot with the needle on the EM6910 right where it is supposed to be. There is obviously a flaw with the calibration with some of these grinders.

I cant believe how good a coffe I can get out of this combo of grinder and machine without being taught, I am quite often paying for worse in the cafes around town. I guess I have to thank the sunbeam techies who helped me fix the problem, and Ill have to make sure I practice every day.

Re: New EM0480 - not working?

No need, I appreciated another pearler this morning, if its a machine I can make it work! Im the only coffee drinker in the house but I have to make the odd proper (melted chocolate with steamed milk) hot chocolate and babycino, so I am getting enough practice. Once I get better I was thinking about doing a latte art course to get the milk totally squared away. Its not a high priority though, now I am using real beans instead of the dodgy vacuum packed ones because the grinder works so now I am a happy camper, now I have to work on getting a Pullman Tamper with a Huon Pine handle.....

I hope my post helps other people who may have similar problems with their grinder.
