smaller hopper for Mazzer Super Jolly

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Ok... so Ive removed the docking station for the portafilter on the SJ and am now getting a much better result with the grind not spraying everywhere when I dose, and the machine is plenty fast enough, and fine enough for home use, especially when friends (or in my case a recent mothers - or should I say parents group at my place) come around.

But the hopper is just too damn big for home use!

Its not the size that I mind, as it looks great on my benchtop, but Im never going to go through as many beans as the hopper can store, so Im looking for smaller hopper options.

No doubt this modification has already been explored on coffeesnobs, but I cant find it anywhere.

I called coffee parts and asked about using the Mini hopper for the Jolly, but the Mini is to small 5cm/5.5cm Vs 6cm/6.5 interior and exterior collar measurements.

Im told its been done before, so if anyone has any pointers here, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Pat

I cant help if you go ahead with this Pat.

I just wanted to point out that the hopper is not neant for storage.

    I have the Macap M5.
It has the larger hopper as compared top the M4.
Ive never put more than enough beans for a 4 coffees in it, and they were ground immediately.

Ive actually heard from a couple of sources that the hopper collars are the same size.

When I called coffee parts the dude measured and told me that the Mini is definitely smaller by about one cm, so Im assuming that the guy is right.

Ive actually got a Mini at my work, so Ill double check the figures myself on Monday.

Have been on holidays for the last 2 weeks, hanging out at home with my little family, ah... bliss... but now back to work on Monday: Reality check! Its time to pay some bills!

    Hi (again!) Pat,

Ive looked into this myself recently and my understanding is that the hoppers are all the same size throat. Having said that, I dont even use the Minis hopper; I just spoon the beans I need into the throat, drop a spare filter basket over the top and grind away. A great use for single baskets! Takes up no space and theyre a perfect fit (the Synesso double basket is a sliding interference fit in the Minis throat)

Although I havent actually measured them, a few weeks ago I looked up measurements
for both and found them to be the same; also several reports of interchanging hoppers.

As Greg says, the hopper is redundant if you dont do many shots at a time. A tamper
fits nicely in the throat as well.

thanks guys, I did some research myself and came up with the same results: i.e. both machines have a 58mm hopper collar

Check this out if youre interested:

    http://www.wholelattelove.com/Mazzer.cfm

Now to see if i can get my hands on one locally!

I agree with what has been said about using a stopper on the hopper collar, but I would like a small hopper anyway, just for the asthetics!

    Anyway, thanks for youre help.

I believe that coffee parts have the part.

I contact them again and let you know how I go.

    Cheers,

    Pat

PS - Greg - did you end up selling the SJ locally?

    Greg,

I couldnt help laughing my arse off at the idea that every single person in the universe who uses their grinder without a hopper puts a tamper in the throat, except for you. Youve got, what, one million ... two billion tampers sitting around? Probably even one thats an exact fit for the throat!

    Pat,

One option might be to get a spare doser cover and then cut the hopper down so that the doser cover is a perfect fit for it. Personally, Im not fussed enough by the big hopper to be bothered doing anything about it.

    Cheers,

    Luca

:) It wasnt an issue in Perth as we had plenty of overhead room on the bench, but back here in Adelaide I did use a tamper or two for a while until the clutter of filter baskets led me down that path! I only actually have about four or five tampers around the machine, the others are scattered elsewhere around the house.

    Hi

This works really well. I saw it (somewhere) on the net. It is a stainless preserves funnel, and it also fits the portofilter exactly for further declumping etc. ;D

Have also heard of others using a canning funnel. Im going to pick one up soon. Should be able to find something to fit for a lid. I have been just putting them in the throat with a top I had that fit.
