Any good Mods for Breville BCG450

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
i will be getting the grinder as part of a combo with the Ikon- when santa shows up :P. The plan is to use Krups baskets -when they arrive (with a custom tamper). From what ive read the grinder doesnt stack up that well and was wondering if anybody has done any research in how to get the best out of it while it lasts.............And i dont mean fill with lead and use for door stop ;D

The BCG450 is not as bad as many make it sound. It has at least got real cutting edges unlike the other Breville grinders which have flat burrs but they are not sharp and in effect, they crush beans rather than shear them. Give that a try first but one thing to note, ignore the pre-set settings that you get at the hopper. The "espresso" setting on mine was too coarse on the Gaggia Carezza and to get to a near decent shot, I had to set it on the border of the espresso and turkish setting. I think the settings were designed for pressurised baskets. If youre using unpressurised, you might need to go the finest (turkish) setting even. Judge the grind setting by the shots and not by what the hopper setting says, I suppose.

After thinking for a while on this i went back to the retailer and asked about upgrading the BCG0450 to a EM480 ( since the BCG450 hadnt been opened). Cost *extra $40 but seemed well worth it. Although i know from reading elsewhere there is a can of worms pending with the EM0480 in time. :-/

It would be nice to have the funds for a Rocky & Silvia but that aint gunna happen for a long time. The Ikon and EM480 cost a grand total of $320 which is the best compromise i could hope for. ;)
