Rocky - how do I empty hopper to clean

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Sorry for the dumb question. HAve just bought a rocky and silvia (thanks to all your advice here at CSs). I must say I am very happy and it has not taken me at all long to get the hang of them. However I dont seem to be able to empty / take off bean hopper from the Rocky. Thats fine - I am happy to only put as many beans in as is necessary for the amount of coffee but how will I ever get it off to clean it (I believe I am supposed to do this from time to time). Am worried that if I unscrew the little black lid thing insider the hopper I will stuff something up as Ive read another post here about someone who did the same thing and then stuffed up the calibration...

    Hi nikkikirks,
Basically you have to undo three screws from the inside bottom of the hopper. Although its been a while since I owned one, I recall them having Phillips head slots. By little black lid thing, I presume you mean the finger guard. Far be it from me to recommend doing anything that might leave you vulnerable to injury, but taking out the guard is usually one of the first things many Rocky owners do (that, and removing the PF holder). However, Im not sure that is necessary just to remove the screws.

There is another screw, underneath and outside the hopper, that forms a kind of stop to prevent you adjusting the burr carrier too fine and mashing the blades ( I think). I never found this to be a hindrance, and it is necessary to be able to find your zero point, i.e. the place where the burrs just touch, whenever you remove the top carrier to clean the burrs - something you should do periodically. There are instructions for this, and for your own question, here:

It is actually fun, as well as good practice, to learn to maintain your beloved, and costly, equipment, and you will feel satisfied knowing that it is clean and performing as well as possible. It goes without saying that your coffee will also taste better for it...

    Best of luck,
    Matt

Just to clarify, the little screw that hangs down from the bottom of the hopper should not prevent you finding your zero point.

The instructions on Coffeegeek are for an older model than is generally available here. If you have the doserless model, just ignore instructions about cleaning the doser. On my grinder, Im sure the screws were Phillips head, but use whatever screwdriver fits. You should be able to undo them through the finger guard (if you leave it in ;))
