Basically you have to undo three screws from the inside bottom of the hopper. Although its been a while since I owned one, I recall them having Phillips head slots. By little black lid thing, I presume you mean the finger guard. Far be it from me to recommend doing anything that might leave you vulnerable to injury, but taking out the guard is usually one of the first things many Rocky owners do (that, and removing the PF holder). However, Im not sure that is necessary just to remove the screws.
There is another screw, underneath and outside the hopper, that forms a kind of stop to prevent you adjusting the burr carrier too fine and mashing the blades ( I think). I never found this to be a hindrance, and it is necessary to be able to find your zero point, i.e. the place where the burrs just touch, whenever you remove the top carrier to clean the burrs - something you should do periodically. There are instructions for this, and for your own question, here:
It is actually fun, as well as good practice, to learn to maintain your beloved, and costly, equipment, and you will feel satisfied knowing that it is clean and performing as well as possible. It goes without saying that your coffee will also taste better for it...
Best of luck,
