    EM0480 grinder setting not working

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
We have had the sunbeam em0480 for a couple of weeks and it has been fine. For some inexplicable reason the grinder started grinding really coarsely. The adjustment makes no difference we get the same coarse grind on 1 or 20. Have cleaned the burrs and put back together exactly as instructed, taking care to line everything up. Have done it at least half a dozen times just in case.

I would call Sunbeam but cant till tomorrow. Cant exchange it as the shop (and all those in the area) are out of stock. Does anyone have any suggestions...or am I destined for a lack of caffeine headache?......watch out family..it aint gonna be pretty!!

Sounds familiar, this happened to me on EM450 after cleaning machine, if you dont lock the top burr in correctly you get coarse grinds. Line up the two white dots and lock it in place. Hopefully that is all it will be.

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. Having read some past posts in this forum before posting I have already done that and checked and rechecked and had dh do the same thing. This is definitely not the cause.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Re: EM0480 grinder setting not working

I just got my em0480, and after initially having a problem of too fine, then too coarse, after thoroughly checking and reseating the top burr, i am very pleased to say that I have finally got it going correctly.

I have had way too many bad coffees this weekend testing this and am finally enjoying a truly good one.

    best of luck.

The problem with the em0450 and em0480 is that they are all calibrated differently. When I first got mine, it was grinding too coarse even on 1. Call Sunbeam tomorrow and they will send you a washer and some instructions to install it under the burrs. That should solve the problem. Or you could go back to where you got it and get a new one. Might still need the washer. call sunbeam ;)

    Gluck!

NP have you turned the thing all the way around before putting it back together?
Sorry for asking, but just in case.

Re: EM0480 grinder setting not working

Today Ive just got around to "fixing" my EM0480, its about 18 months old, well out of warrantee and Ive been having to grind on 0 (or below!) to get decent extraction out of my Silvia over the last month or so.

So I pulled it all apart as per the instructions in this link: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1183436456/0

The link above talks about 3 different solutions to problems people have had with this grinder, mostly the problems seem to be associated with causing you to need to grind at a much lower setting than you initially set the grinder at when new, and much lower than the 12-16 range suggested by Sunbeam for espresso.

    1) The upper burr not seated properly in the upper burr carrier over time, corrected by removing the upper burr from the carrier and putting tape/string/something else thin at the top of the upper burr carrier before reinserting the burr. *The aim being to make the base of the upper burr level with the base of the upper burr carrier again. *

    2) Slop in lower burr shaft, corrected by removing the lower burr, sweeper, bearing and replacing the rubber seal around the shaft with something more rigid, eg a wooden or plastic bush.

    3) Adding extra spacers beneath the lower burr to correct the too fine grind setting problem.

I found that in my case the upper burr carrier was not the problem, it was still seated correctly, level with the bottom of the burr carrier. I also found that there wasnt excessive slop in the shaft due to the rubber seal/bush below the lower burr. *

What I did find was that the small locating tabs on the sides of the upper burr carrier (the little bits of plastic that engage the thread in the grind adjustment collar housing) were some what deformed, kind of bent downwards so as to allow the upper burr carrier to sit higher than it should. *

The 4th image down in the article at this link clearly shows the tabs/ears I am talking about: http://www.coffeeco.com.au/articles/sunbeamgrinder.html

I think that this was the source of the problems with my grinder. *Compared with that image, the tabs/ears on my burr carrier were more horizontal, and I think this could be the cause of problem 3) above.

To fix it I needed to raise the lower burr a fraction by adjusting the lower burr spacers. *

My EM0480 had 3x 0.25mm washers/spacers factory installed below the lower burr. *I found some 5/16" flat brass washers at Bunnings (Zenith, pk of 10 for ~$3) which were about 0.7mm thick and replaced one of the original spacers with one brass washer to give me ~1.2mm of spacers, up from ~0.75mm. *The outer diameter of the brass washer was a little bigger than the original but it fits fine.

This worked a treat and Im now back grinding in the 14 range.

The grinder definitely needed a good clean during the strip down and rebuild too!

This fix might work for others and is very simple to do, only a philips head screwdriver and 10mm spanner are required, you just need to make sure you dont raise the lower burr so far that it hits the upper burr at the highest grind setting!

Re: EM0480 grinder setting not working

I just bought one of these grinders for home and putting it together for the first time got the too coarse curse. I adjusted the top burr and now Im getting too finer grinds. I am using it with a Cafe Crema and have found in the past (with my blade based grinder) that it cant handle fine grinds. So the only usable grind settings on my EM0480 are 20 and above. I have compared grinds with those from vacuum packed grinds and store grinds, and even at 30 it still seems finer!

We have an EM0480 at work as well and it produces usable grinds around the 10 notch. That grinder is 2 years old and when we first purchased it, we were using it on 14.

So Im wondering whether the grinder grinding too fine is actually a blessing in disguise - as certainly the burrs will wear with time, leaving the grinder still usable on a finer notch when the wearing occurs.

Re: EM0480 grinder setting not working

Hi all, still have the problem however have worked out why. The locating tabs on the upper burr have sheared completedly off - chances are we drank it, I had a laugh. Have been mad at work and havent had a chance to do much about it besides leave messages with the shop we bought it from who promised to follow up with Sunbeam.

Yesterday my dh rang to find out what was going on (nearly a week with crap coffee...arghh...to be told that we need to take it to a service agent for repair (they werent prepared to swap the burr with their demonstrator model even though they havent got any grinders to sell). The grinder was not even two weeks old. I will call Sunbeam on Monday however I am nearly at a point where I will pack up the grinder and the coffee machine and take the lot back but this would justl nothing.

Should have bought the sylvia/rocky to begin with!!!

The grinder has a*REPLACEMENT warranty. They should just take it back and give you a new one. I know, I had two new ones before doing the spacer mod. If they wont call Sunbeam.

Thanks flatewhite. The problem is that nooone has any to replace with. I intend to take the grinder back and get my money back. I have ordered another one at Myer who are offering 15% off at the moment. They advised me will be available from Sunbeam after the 18th April.

    I can survive a couple of weeks ...I can...I can :(

    All is good.

Took the grinder back. Got the runaround however got my refund in the end.

Got the grinder from Myer with a 15% discount and bought a bang bang older model for half price, so in effect got it for nothing.

    ;D
