hey!
okay so ive had my em0480 for about a month now, and its going well in combination with my silvia.
ive been reading through various articles on this site and it seems that most people have theirs set in the really low regions, whereas i have mine at around 17 to get a normal pour rate.
has anyone that has bought one recently had this or is it just me, as i would like to know if im going wrong somewhere.

I have a em0480 - mine is at 14 for espresso (give or take a notch depending on the weather and bean) and about 21 for plunger. It appears each grinder is different. If I go below 11 I choke my machine.
I think it is probably down to the day it came off the production line. ;)
yeh fair enough, and i suppose if it tastes good then i should stop worrying about it anyways!

The other thing to check is that your top burr is properly seated. If you check other posts regarding the EM0480 if it isnt seated properly it can give very different settings and be inconsistent.
Hi all, Mine is set on 22 for that perfect espresso......I dont worry about the numbers, I just watch the pour and thats all that counts. ;)

Scottishslayer you will also notice some coffee beans need to be ground finer than others.
mine depends on when I last cleaned it.
At the moment, it is on 17 and I am getting some wonderful shots on my EM6910 using the double basket. For single basket, Ill ramp it up to 20 - 22.
Each time I have taken it apart to clean the burrs etc and put it back together (carefully making sure everything is seated correctly) it seems to take a day or 2 to settle and the number can be anywhere from 15 to 21 for a double (again coming back to 17 / 18 for a good double)

Yes I agree that the beans can make a difference too. I get mine from Di Bella coffee and when I changed blends I found that I could grind a lot finer, the last blend would choke the machine. Now its at 7-8 which seems way finer than everyone else does it.
Ive cleaned mine and I still have to grind it on a 5 or a 6 in order to get the right pour for espresso.
Ring Sunbeam and tell them and they will send you out some spacers/washers to rectify.

Just to add another new-users experience.
I bought my EM0480 about 3 weeks ago, and eventually settled on 14 for the beans I had bought. I purchased some different beans last week, and blindly ground some without changing setting. To say that burnt toast would have tasted better than the resultant brew would be an understatement. Eventually settled on 17 for the new beans.

My grinder seemed to be stuffed, i would have it on the finest grind and I would have to tamp the hell out of it so i could get a decent pour.
Read up on these forums and found out that SUNBEAM have a fix for this problem. A washer was sent out and easily installed, problem fixed, now I get a very fine grind and have to set it to around 7-8....
yayyy coffee tastes much better aswell!!
I have sort of the opposite problem - grind on 16 - any less and the coffee wont flow even with a very wimpy tamp

okay aussieflicker, from what your telling me, seems you have a very fine grind. What you need to do is remove a washer from underneath the bur...(I had to add a washer because my grind was too coarse)
Easy to do, take off the container(that contains the coffee beans), remove the hop and basket.
You will then see a nut with an L shape washer, you need to take them off. Use a spanner to hold burr still and unlock the nut by turning clockwise.
Then you need to lift out the burr grinder and beneath that there may be a washer(s). If so, you need to remove it, there may be more than one washer, just remove one at this stage.
Put it back together and see how you go.
Ideal grind setting should be set to 5-10.

righto - one washer our, grind setting gone from 16 - 12, and needed a firmer tamp.

Why remove the washer? Just set it to grind coarser. The index number is meaningless comparing between machines. Its only useful/needed for knowing where to set your grinder for different beans/conditions. If you remove the washer(s) now youll only end up putting them back in later as your grinder wears in.

Coarser wasnt coarse enough for the coffee to flow. One washer out is great.
