Iberital Challenge - Grind not fine enough

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Can anyone out there give me some advice. I just cannot seem to get my grind fine enough to pull decent shot. Ive got fresh, decent quality beans. As you would probably know, the IC has the cr*ppy dial on the side that you are meant to turn to adjust the fineness of your grind. Its just not fine enough!!! I thinking of taking it back and paying extra for a better grinder (Rancilio Rocky DL).

Re: Iberital Challenge - Grind not fine enough

    Hi,

this is very very unusual as these grinders have few if any problems and when we unpack them to set up at sale, they are always set up to grind way way way way too fine....so fine in fact that they wont draw beans in until you back the adjuster off about a gazillion turns.....

Before taking it back to your supplier to have it checked, try emptying out all the beans...and grinding out the residue from between the burrs.......and then not having any resistance in there from coffee residue, wind the adjuster back in to a finer setting & try again.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi,

Ive had no issues with my IC. It grinds really well - its very easy to choke my machine. It does take lots of adjusting and turning of the knob to get it right but now that Ive done it I only make small changes between beans. Overall an excellent grinder for the money.

    Thanks, FC.

Given that youve mentioned that it needed to be turned a "gazillion" times to open it up, perhaps the burrs were open too far when I unpacked it and my perception of how many turns of the dial to adjust the grind have not been enough?

Incidentally, how many turns will the dial go? If you keep winding it, will the burrs eventually meet until it can not be turned any further?

(Thanks for your advice as well, michel_c)

we have never wound one of these in until the burrs touch (sore arm syndrome) but theoretrically thats exactly what should happen and it does on other grinders.

Keep turning and it should be "just fine"!

Its a double edged sword. While it has to be moved a gazillion turns to do anything noticeable, that makes it one of the most precise grinder adjuster mechanisms this side of the black stump...very very accurate.

    We like them.

The Iberital Challenge is a great grinder
You won’t notice any change in grind until you turn the adjusting knob about 5 times
I have been told the worm drive has a fine thread

When we moved up from our krappy krups to the maver makin, the iberital had to be wound more than 30 times to get the right grind setting.

Its a good grinder for the price you pay for.

funny you mentioned that. i was never able to choke my san marino compact until yesterday when I swapped/traded my challenge for a rocky. the rocky, secondhand, had liquid paper markings with F and C... I figured Course and Fine... well, I ground on F and the poor portafiller would only drip a few drops in a 30 second period.. i opened her up a notch then two and found the setting i needed. I wouldnt have believed it if I hadnt seen it.. i had wound and wound the challenge and couldnt choke my machine ever, even though the grind seemed as fine as flour...

    cheers fellow snobs....

I should add I was very very happy with the challenge. I was just having a hell of a time with static and the doserless was ultra messy for me. Now with the Rocky Doser I can already tell that things will be less messy around here.

off to do the step less and sweeper mods on the weekend..

    cheers
