    compak k-9?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Well, I have just (at my own risk) bought a grinder off ebay, being supposedly a compak k-9 (according to the seller, it is a precursor to the k-10)

I havent received it yet, so i cant actually check it, but an online search doesnt seem to reveal the existence of any compak k-9 grinders.

Do they actually exist or have i bought the grinder equivelant of a a Rolax watch? :D

Just curious, and yes I know that ebay purchasing can sometimes lead to grief. Will also post updates when i actually receive the grinder.

paid via paypal and credit card if it is widely varied from the description, i will dispute the charge. That said, it is from a seller who is in theory liquidating from a closed cafe. They also had a cunill up for sale as well as some fixtures - so i am fairly sure it will be a decent grinder, just unsure as to whether its a typo when they say compak 9 or a rebadge.

Yeah I remember seeing it by the Bay. I think its a good pick-up off hand. Looks the goods. Looking forward to hearing about it when you get it in your hands. I dont think youve anything to worry about majorly raphec. I think either way its gonna do a better job than the emo480. ;)

    Re: compak k-9?

id be pretty happy with a k8 :D

the idea is to replace the em0480 and then eventually the classic so i can move them either to my dads place or work (i spend a lot of time at both) as i currently cant drink the coffee at either...

this is step 1. Apparently it has also recently had its burrs replaced.

    Re: compak k-9?

We have no record of a Compak K9 - we have never imported one of these models into Australia - we are almost certain that Compak have never had a K9 Model

From the pictures it looks actually like a Compak K7 - which were discontinued around 1998/1999 (we only ever bought very few of these into the country maybe as few as 6) - these were around 1/2 horsepower, 75mm cutters (which are difficult to source - we have none in stock at this time).

Suggest you contact Compak directly - although the company is closed during the August Southern European Summer Holiday period at the moment, they may be able to provide further information on the "K9" but we believe that they dont or never have existed.

    Re: compak k-9?

    thanks heaps for that.

will wait till it arrives and i can actually go over it before i try contacting compak.

So it will most likely either be a k7 or k8. either way, it should be better than my em0480 :)

heres hoping it arrives as described in good working condition with recently replaced cutters.

Well, apparently it has been packed and sent so I should have the grinder mid to next week

I did ask in an email for verification of the model number and how long ago it was serviced. Apparently it was serviced 4 months ago, and is definitely a compak k9. will wait til it arrives to be sure, but its now panning out to be a little bit of a mystery.

maybe i will rip a mask off it when it arrives and it will say "dang! i would have got away with it too if it hadnt been for those pesky meddlin kids!"

    Re: compak k-9?

    Well it arrived today!

It appears (the lettering is faded and I am at work so have not had a great look at it) to be a Compak K6 1999 model.

So assuming it was properly serviced in the last 6 months (seller says 4 months ago) i am pretty happy with my purchase (on the assumption i get it home and it doesnt go bang :D )

    more on it later.

    Re: compak k-9?

well, its at home, it works, its.... ummm... big...

couple of minor things show its age. the seperator bit (i have no idea what its called) has been snapped off and placed back in (wont affect the running of the machine at all as it still sits in nicely) the bit that closes off the hopper between the hopper and the machine is broken on the outside making it a little hard to get open if its closed (again wont really affect the machine).

The blades look nice and clean. the doser appears to be working well.

Id say the machine is quieter than my em0480....

did i mention that it is BIG? :)

it certainly wont fit in my coffee alcove with my gaggia stand there. Good thing the gaggia is being moved on the weekend if all goes well.

Soon i will try to work out what grind setting i need.

Also may try to source a new, or smaller hopper... Can you get smaller hoppers? :D

and possibly some adjustments to the doser (ive never had a doser before)

    tips, advice etc always accepted.

    pics sometime later.

    Yay for you raphec!

A techie dropped by the roastery today and noticed my grinder (also a Compak) and mentioned that the gate (thats only what I call it) on the hopper is susceptible to breaking, so Im planning to be extra careful with mine.

2mcm would be a good person to speak to regarding the possibility of sourcing a smaller hopper.

    Re: compak k-9?

I call it a gate too Dennis.

The one on my Macap broke recently.
The bit that stops it pulling out when opening the hopper, broke off one morning just before I was about to grind.

I close it to stop some of the popcorning.

Lucky I saw it or that shot might have had a plastic taste to it.

Renzo got me another one and all is as new again but I did notice that the one in the Gino Rossi is made of metal not plastic.

just for comparison sake, heres a pic of the compak next to my em0480.

do need to source a new hopper, ideally a smaller one. If i get a new one, i may try just cutting the old one down, but im not sure how successful that would be.

Well.... It is a full-on commercial grinder "raphec" ;) 8-)

Nice looking grinder though. Re: the Hopper.... You may be able to find something made from stainless steel that will work as a substitute for the plastic job. Some s/s insulated Hot-Drink mugs will cut down into quite reasonable looking mini-hoppers ;)

    Re: compak k-9?

    Mal,

It is indeed a nice looking grinder. It is also incredibly quiet. Is taking a bit of getting used to with it having a doser. Never had one of those before. Ive been relearning how to fill my basket as its seeming very different.

travel mug eh? Not a bad idea. Will wait for Diamond C to get back to me regarding hopper pricing and see what the deal is first. Its certainly usable as it is now. Just makes it look more daunting.
