    Compak K3 Elite (Espresso Area?)

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Well I have stepped up a knotch by upgrading from a Sunbeam EM0480 to the Compak K-3 Elite.

I had a read through the manual (breifly skimmed it anyway) and noticed a phrase in it called the Espresso Area.

I wanted some clarfication on this for 2 reasons.

    1. being that I would like to have a better understanding of what this means in terms of Grind adjustment and
    2. being that when i got the grinder home I did a test run with the machine and I had to dial it to the finest setting with a prett firm tamp to get the shot close to what it should be.

I assume that I can ajust the grind adjustment dial back so it can give me more to play with.

Anyone with a compak or knowledge that can help me. I didnt want to pull it all apart not really understanding what I am doing.) The manual is poorly written with minimal photos. I like photos (I learn better visually.)

    Cheers
    Steve

Have you established where "True Zero" is as yet Goodies? It might be just a matter that what you read on the adjustment scale doesnt accurately represent what is actually happening. I dont usually take too much notice of where the scale says a particular grind setting is, much prefer to use it as a relative measurement only...

"True Zero" meaning that no coffee will come out?

Ive had mine for about 10 months and have found that my setting is always around the 1 1/2 marks to 2 marks off the center mark, to the right, for espresso .... if that makes sense!! Might be marginally more/less for some roasts. Use a Sylvia.
Would have thought there is no need to set it on the finest setting for a shot (thats way too fine a grind for the Sylvia, at least for mine)
I also didnt pick anything up from the manual - tells you not much at all.
    Cheers, jon

    Hi Steve,

Been a while since I had mine, but if you look in the appropriate section of the review I did i.e. http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/kb/reviews/mini-k3/#grind-adjustment-scale youll see the scale I added to my own unit. From what I recall (18 months down the track after selling it), I think I normally had mine around the 2-3 area on that scale. However I had also removed the stops so I could adjust finer than it initially allowed and Im not sure whether I would have been able to get to this point if they were intact. The stops arent that hard to remove but you have to unscrew the top collar cover with those three Allen key screws and there are some more Allen key screws hiding under that that act as stops (Im pretty sure I refer to this somewhere in that review... yep, just found it in the cleaning section).

With the stops removed you have to be careful when adjusting finer as theres nothing to stop the burrs touching. If you put a scale of your own on your hopper lid, with the grinder running just very slowly turn it finer until you *just* hear the burrs touch (take it slowly!). You should never need to get that fine so make a mark of where it is for future reference. You could always try to move the stop screw but you need them out the way to remove the top burr for cleaning and I found it a pain to have to unscrew the top collar every time I wanted to clean it.
