Which would you buy. BCG450 or EMO450?

    Hi All,

Long time reader, first time poster ;)

Im just starting out, and have aquired a breville Ikon as recommended for entry level. I am progressing ok with it, but have decided i now would like a grinder. (ive been using the pre-ground stuff... bad i know). As you can probably tell be the machine, budget is limited as im the only one in the house that drinks it... and again, based on the grinder info posted here, im looking at either the BCG450 or EMO450... i can get both at the same price... so which one is better? or are they too close to call?

On a side note, i havent replaced the pressureised basket? that come standard with the Ikon... where can i but the after market ones again please?

Thanks in advance for all the info you guys have already provided, looking forward to learning more.

    cheers,
    brett.

    Welcome to Coffee Snobs Brett.

    The EM0450.

Even if the price was different my answer would be the same.
The Breville doesnt enjoy a good reputation and the Sunbeam is considered the absolute minimum quality for a grinder.

I agree with TG. I started with the Breville and it would not grind fine enough to even make the guage on my 6910 move. I took it back for a refund and ourchased a SB 0480.

I started with a Sunbeam EM450 and still use it in my garage for early morning grinding, its a great little machine and makes a good espresso.
Id go for the Sunbeam, heaps of CSers have them and they do a good job for the price...............

Go for the em0480 - that is - i think it is worth spending the 40 odd extra dollars to get the em0480 rather than the em0450 because of the switch. The em0450 does not have an on off switch on the side, only the auto bush button that must be held in. The 0480 has an on off switch that is invaluable. Lets face it, it is not the swiftest grinder in the world - you can take your hand off the portafilter while you attend to the machine or the fridge etc.

thanks for the tips guys. I had read somewhere that you can do a mod to the breville to allow it to grind fine... but yeah, prolly go with the SB. Ill check into the 480 also.

    cheers,
    brett.
