    Daniel,

    The Gene consumes 1.25Kw...... so flat out (and it switches towards the end of the roast) it would use 1.25KwH per hour or about .42 KwH per roast....

    Depending where you are (electricity tariffs vary per location) and what tariff you are on (the greater the power consumption the lower the tariff)..... here it costs a bit under 13c per KwH....

    So a roast will cost about 5.5c

    Do you think you can afford it? ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

    By the way, the Hottop (for those interested) uses 0.85Kwh per hour...... so a roast will cost about 3.7c in the Hottop....

    With a 33% saving..... you can soon pay for the price of a Hottop ::)

    Hi

    As JavaB indicated the electricity is cheap. The only real cost is the green beans at ~ 10 or 12 /kg. I usually do a 250 gm load in my Gene so thats about $3. The only other cost maybe the heater element burning out but that can be replaced.

    So at beans + electricity of $3.05 for 250 grams roast away :-)

    My Gene paid for itself in one year as I used to buy already roasted beans at ~ $40/kg from a city roaster. So after roasting a kg I have saved about $30.

    Theres also the intangible cost that comes with this since the neighbours apparently dont appreciate bouts of foul language

    Probably the most significant cost of all ;D .....
    Meet a lot of new friends though and then maybe some potential for future coffee snobs ;)

    Re: How much does it cost to roast each time?

    A few approximations.

    If you paid $750 for a GeneCafe, and wrote the cost off over say 5 years, then youd have an annual capital cost of $150, plus the lost potential interest of say $40/y. You need to add $190 to the annual running costs.

    Bean price is say $10/kg green and $35/kg brown.
    However, green loses say 15% weight, and roasting stuff ups say 10% wastage (depending on adventurousness and competence). *So well call green $13/kg.

    From the above, electricity is $0.02/kg and discounted.

    If you consume 10kg/year then
    Green = $190 + $13x10 = $330/year
    Brown = $32x10 =$350/year

    The costs are approximately the same for green or brown over the first 5 years using these assumptions, but if the GeneCafe is still going strong then it starts paying for itself. Higher consumption will lower the roasting costs, quicker upgrades or equipment failure will raise them etc.

    Not sure how this stacks up against Mikes payback time.

    Re: How much does it cost to roast each time?

    If you use a corretto instead of a Gene the initial outlay is nowhere near $750.

    BTW your figures appear incorrect.

    Green = $190 + $13x10 = $320/year
    I think you deducted the 10% wastage for brown instead of adding, so say $38/kg = $380/year

    You didnt allow for your 10% wastage for brown so say $38/kg = $380/year
    That would be the approximations I was talking about *;)

    Brown doesnt have wastage as that is carried by the roaster. (Any wastage during brewing is the same as for the roasted green.)

    A corretto would have lower capital costs and have much lower costs over 5 years. Presumably marginally more wastage due to the manual nature? A Hottop would be much more expensive than brown over the 5 years.

    An accountant may be able to discount asset cash flows to the present value and this may make the situation either better or worse as I dont understand it.

    Re: How much does it cost to roast each time?

    I also think 10kg per year is very very low.
    I have just done 3X 280gm in my Gene - I get out about 235-240gm with zero wastage.
    I reckon we will drink that in about 10 days.
    So look at your model using 35kg. It would look a lot cheaper to home roast than to buy brown

    Re: How much does it cost to roast each time?

    Actually, looking back at my BeanBay purchases I reckon Ill be close to 8-ish kg over the 6 months Ive been home roasting, so 16kg/year. I think that I purchased about 1kg/month (14kg/y green equivalent) in my brown days. I possibly drink more now, because its more interesting, but I also give coffee away to family and friends.

    35kg would be cheaper even with Hottop priced gear.

    My 16kg/y makes my iRoast2 definitely cheaper over 5 years. However, its possibly got less chance of making it that far compared to a Gene.

    Re: How much does it cost to roast each time?

    My bad on the wastage figure *baldryk.

    I think 20kg/year is closer to my personal consumption.

    And as for roasting wastage...zero as far as Im concerened (if you forget that recent batch I driopped).

    Re: How much does it cost to roast each time?

    In very round numbers, our annual consumption would be close to 30Kg green and using a Corretto with the only additional costs being a Heatgun for $46 and a Drill Press for $13, overall roasting costs are nominal at best.

    Regarding wastage, I havent had to toss any roasts with the Corretto and only a couple with the popper a few years ago. A couple of years before that I managed to burn the odd roast here and there using a gas torch with a stainless bowl but thats a whole other story. Even tinkered with a very basic fluid bed roaster using a vacuum cleaner motor, some spare stainless flu pipe and the trusty gas torch. All of that got back-burnered when the Corretto came along though.... 8-)

    ;D I dont dare let my financial planning husband get any further on his coffee calculations - I just offer another coffee, and it defers the conversation! I went from the "green beans are cheap" theory, to using it as an excuse to introduce fresh quality coffee to many of my friends because it was cheap. ;D

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
    I agree Mal.
    Even if you took into account purchasing a BM and HG for up to $250, the costs are still nominal when you spread that out over 12 months.
    My current HG is over 26 months old and still going strong.

    Given roasted coffee ranges from between $30 - $40 per KG its always ahead for cost.

    And those of us who happen to sell some as well then this is a real bonus.
