Wahgi was my second ever roast with a dog bowl and spoon :) The flavour of that was what turned me into a home roaster really. I have done about a dozen roast of this one so far and all bar a premature ejection :o have been great. My top up supplies should be here Monday :)

This is a great bean Mal I have got quite a bit of this one from Beanbay and when it pops up I just cant resist. If you roast just shy of 2cr you wont be disapointed.
Quite sweet and as an espresso its one which can convert those who just drink milk drinks to have espressos.

    Re: PNG WAHGI AA

I just finished my first roast of this bean today. It is a very different looking bean from the others that I have tried (only the Ethiopian Longbery and Gambella). I still dont have a thermocouple but I am trying to keep my roasting techniques consistent and learn the different characteristics of different beans.
So I roasted the PNG WAHGI AA today doing the same as I did for the Ethiopian varieties.....I reached at FC around 11:30 and SC at 17:30. Pulled it out as soon as I heard SC. I compared the beans to my membership card and I would say it is between 8 and 9. The big difference is that the middle of the bean is quite light almost like a white line where the bean cracks. Does this sound strange or is it a characteristic of this bean?

Alistair, thats probably chaff that has been retained in the bean. When I have roasted this i found it to be very clean an even.
Post a photo so someone with a bit more knowledge may be able to help.

    Hi Alistair

that white line you are referring to I think will be some remment chaff still attached to the bean. The roast of this I did last night had a bit of chaff still on some of the beans out of the Hottop as well. Dont worry about it to much would be my call. Photo if you can however.

I received 5 kg of Wahgi this morning and roasted about 400g straight away.
Mine also had the same light coloured line... but then so do most of my other roasted varieties.
Dunno if it matters or not though.

    Hi Alistair,

Your roast profile is pretty much what I use for this bean but I stop a few deg. short of SC. I took one roast to the first snaps of SC, but I didnt enjoy it, as to me, it had an ashy flavour.
See how it tastes to you in the cup as this is what counts.

    Cheers,
    Alan

Ok here is a photo...White balance is a bit out but I think you should be able to get the idea.

Roast is very even compared to the Ethiopian beans but the white (yellowish on screen) is quite a contrast to the chocolate colour of the beans.

[smiley=thumbsup.gif] looks great, nice even colour. Small chaff bits look about normal compared to mine :)

Nice roast the white line you referred to is indeed retained chaff this is pretty normal, some beans vary quite a lot from others.
