    Re: Where to start??

Go to this link and have a look at the Important topics at the top
Have a good read as just about all roast methods are covered
Such as Off the shelf units & Home made roasters

It all depends on your budget and your expected capacity or amount you want to roast

I believe the I roast has a capacity of 250gr of green beans

Go and have a read as a starting point - the I Roast is also reviewed *;)

    Re: Where to start??

    Hi,

I started with a Stainless Steel bowl, Heat Gun and a Wooden Spoon :) The first couple of roasts were done without a temperature meter but one quickly followed.

If you want to have a play try that option even if you beg borrow or steal someone elses heat gun and grab a Starter Pack from Beanbay. No $$ entry apart from the beans.

You cant use an oven as the beans give off smoke and chaff (like the outside of peanuts), not to mention the fire risk if it is a gas one.

I went down the path of a second hand Hottop but a Corretto/Bread Maker is a cheaper option.

Also where in Oz are you and you might be able to find a fellow coffeesnob that roasts to go and have a look at their setup?

Be warned Roasting is as addictive as Caffeine :D

Youre a Brisbo right? What suburb?

Why dont you go down to Veneziano and use their awesome Geisen 1KG roaster, probably the cheapest way to start off and a great way to get some coaching from a roasting legend (Peter "Wolfman "Wolff, he is truly inspirational).

Check out their wesbiste re Roast your own

Hi mmmcoffee, I started with a popper and graduated to the Corretto, you can set one up for minimal cost if you scout around for the gear from friends and op shops, it does a fantastic job, heaps of information from fellow roasters to get you on your way, I usually roast 600g at a time which gives me 500g of roasted beans. With a thermocouple to monitor your temperatures its easy to follow roast profiles to a particular beans requirements.
Jump in and build one you wont regret it.
