The sound of one bean cracking . . .

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi,

What a beautiful sunny Sunday :)

I just roasted some New Guinea Sgiri Peaberry in the Imex. Usually my ears cant detect the crackling sounds of 2nd crack over the Imexs motor, but Ive never had a problem distinctly hearing FIRST crack . . . until now!

About 8 1/2 minutes into the roast I heard a single pop. I stopped the roast at 10 mins and after the cool-down the beans were nicely dark brown (Most beans reach 2nd crack in my Imex at around 9 - 11 mins, with rolling 1st crack usually around 7 mins).

What are other peoples experiences with this bean? Do you find the cracking sound quieter than usual? Does it roast slower than average? I dont think ambient temp has slowed this roast down because its a nice warm day.

This is the 2nd batch I roasted. The 1st batch was stopped just past 8 mins (the beans were nicely dark and tasted great, sweet!) but the Imex was already warm plus I was roasting them together with Nicaraguan Maragogipe (picture Arnold Schwarzenegger & Danny Devito in "Twins") so the cracks may have come from Arnie!

I only have 300g of these beans left, which is why Im posting before experimenting the rest of my stock away.

    - Rob

    Hi Rob,

Your roast times sound about right for the Sigri..... They do tend to take on a pretty dark colour well before 2nd Crack is reached and in my experience, Ive found their sweet spot to be around 20-30 seconds before the onset of 2nd Crack proper.

Youre right about the flavour, a really sweet bean with a rich dark chocolate after-taste and fruity undertones..... one of my favourite beans for sure :D. Have still got about a Kilo left but very watchful for when the next batch becomes available in upcoming polls. Ive never tried the Maragogype before so likewise, when some appears in a poll, Ill give them a go.... supposed to have heaps of body and mouth-feel from what Ive read about them.

    Cheers,
    Mal.

I dont know if I have the language to describe what the Maragogipe is like, but Ill give it a go next time I make a shot from it Mal.
