Roasting success - but almost beaten by a Nespresso!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Well I had to do it.

My boss at work was going ON and ON about how good his Nespresso machine is, so having just 2 roasting session under my belt I challenged him to a Coffee-Off !

We each brought our machines to work and at morning tea this morning made 2 Lattes and 3 short backs which were expertly judged blind by fellow workmates. All they did was choose the best coffee - no cupping scoring!

I put a 1/3 blend of CS Guatemala, PNG Gouno and Indian in the EM0480 and cranked up the little Breville cafe Roma.

    The results??

Well it was actually closer than I wished - a TIE !
Lattes - 1/2 point to me, 1 1/2 to the Boss (one judge could pick a winner so gave us 1/2 point each!)
Short Blacks - 2 to me and 1 to the Boss.

I think the test was really what people said about the home roasted coffee and how many coffees I served this morning- about 25 I recon.

And I raised $20 in donations to Faircrack !

Anyway Im really enjoying learning about roasting and espresso. Its very satisfying having workmates come up and put $2 in the donation jar and give great positive comments about the lovely coffee I served!

Thaks coffeesnobs for all the great info and advice!

    Cheers
    Simon

Ummmh... If a Nespresso with preground and 6 months old coffee that brew shoots in 15 sec aprox; can match a fresh roast & fresh ground coffee shot... I think that something does not go very well... :-?

I am also a little surprised about the result, but great work on the Faircrack donation Simon!

Yes - it was a surprise to me too - but very unscientific judging!
I tasted the Nespresso milk drinks. They were better than many lates Ive purchased served from big $$$ cafes and to the untrained noob were acceptable.

Yes, I checked the Nespresso pods. They were fresh - packed Jan 09.

Ive got a bit to learn still! Maybe time for a machine upgrade. :)

Are you sure that no one was watching which cup the boss brought out to taste test *;D

    Great effort *8-)

    Great story and result Simon.

Dont forget you should get bonus points for not dumping plastic capsules into landfill too!

You will have to continue the coffee journey until you can whip the boss 100%.

Haha, maybe inflating the boss ego a bit might lead to a promotion, hmm? Nice trick!

    Hi Simon,

Well Done, a big hearted and gutsy effort in a complex political environment.

Some of the Nesspresso coffees are very good, and in some cases the best way to go - at work we might mike 3 coffees today, then none for a week, so normal coffee is stale before you go too far.

There is, however, a really big difference in cost!

Im in Hong Kong at the moment and Nespresso machines are everywhere, Ive seen shoppers on trains proudly carrying their new Nespresso machine home to make some brews. With the standard of coffee in HK so bad (apart from a few little gems) the capsule brews probably taste like artisan coffee to the populice.
We Coffeesnobs are a privileged breed being able to enjoy quality coffee and able to get a great java when we are out and about!!

But just think Mokka, your roasting will get better.
    The Nespresso wont.
What Nespresso you had on that day will be the best it can do!

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Yes my roasting will get better - trouble is my wife wont let me drill a hold in the side of the bread machine (it was her Grannys) to insert the DMM probe! :(

My boss thinks hes Nespresso is legend and Ill let it stay that way.........until next time that is ;)

    Cheers

Do what I did before drilling a hole and run it down the side of the pan.
Depending on the type of probe (solid or wire) you can hold it in place with a piece of metal tubing or thin wooden dowel.

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
    Mokka
Just get another BM so you have one just for roasting and then you can drill to your hearts content and potentially will be able to move the DMM probe height if you have different roast batch sizes
