Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
yeah this is my first post. :-/

Ive had a couple of goes at home roasting - first by watching a friend and then having a few turns myself. Wow its fun !!

Weve been using the heatgun + metal bowl method. Im still getting the hang of it though - I can tell when 1st crack happens but am sometimes unsure of whether that has finished and second crack started or whether 1st crack is still going.

I found this same thing when I first started. Part of the trick is getting the heat of the gun right, if you are a too hot youll race right through first crack into second and they will blend together. If you are too cool you wont finish first crack. If you have it just right youll get a few minutes gap between the two so its pretty easy to pick. It might be worth just keeping on roasting one batch until its charred black (and then throw it out obviously) just to make sure you know what you are looking for.

The way I heard first and second described best is that first sounds like snapping match sticks and second sounds like snapping toothpicks.

Also, the cracks in the second crack are a lot quicker.

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
For some of the coffees I have I always jump with the first few cracks of first crack.
