Parallels is a virtual machine software (can also use VMWare) that allows you to run windows on a mac. Unlike bootcamp, these virtual machine (VM) sofwares run from within OSX. This means that you can be running both windows and mac programs at the same time (obviously more taxing on the system than bootcamp).

So, you would run the CS data logger from within your windows operating system which is running via parallels...... on a mac :D :D :D

Wine for mac (Darwine) might be another way to approach it, however it still appears to be fairly immature software for the mac compared to its Linux counterpart.
And without meaning to sound condescending, if the OP is not aware of Parallels, installing wine from scratch then trying to get the data logging software to run would probably be a bit of a tall task.

/edit reading http://beanbay.coffeesnobs.com.au/Vi...ct.aspx?ID=318 it would appear that "This new meter ... will require .NET on your Windows PC", so forget I even mentioned Darwine.

It does work on a Mac under Parallels.

I think Wine on the Mac has issues with USB (certainly had issues with the old serial meter).

and the Java USB libary for linux is a real pig (half done) so it wont work there either.

The version 1 of the data logger was (RS232) serial and 100% Java so it was easier to get working on other platforms. The current version 2 is USB and although Java is used for the biys you can see, the stuff that talks to the USB was written in Dotnet.

Our best suggestion is to scrounge an old PC (you can get them for free pretty easily) and this will be the easiest way to get it working.

    Hi all

Thats a shame. I use Linux and write software for people so I know its exceedingly hard sometimes to write software that works on all platforms. It will only be a matter of time before youll need a newer .NET for USB 3.0, a newer version of foo-bar for Vista and a newer version again for Windows 7.0 :-)

Andys suggestion is the best, get an old PC or laptop with Win XP just for the roasts. Less worry about the smoke getting into the hard drive too.

    Rant over .... :-)

Trust me... the programmer that writes the software would far prefer that it worked on everything except Windows! In fact the original serial version was written for Linux and then fudged to suit Windows.

Java is the problem here. If there was a USB libary that worked then the software would still be Java and would be true cross platform.

Sun Java does not support USB and its only the Java community that tries to write patches to make it work. (twas the same with the RS232, Sun Java doesnt write the library for it either)

    So... beat-up Sun, not Windows.

and until Sun change their mind, swallow your pride and grab any old free PC and run your roast monitor software on it, easy!

    Hi

Ah, I just Googled "Sun JAVA USB library" and can see the recent complaints about the problem :-) Now I understand.

    Best wishes
