    First popper roast - Tanzanian

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Finally got around to my first home roast, 6 months after I had the beans generously donated to me by Mal at celebrate the bean

May have taken the roast a bit too long, dont think I even got to 4 mins though, roasted through all the way but thinking a tad dark

    The finished beans

And my setup in the apartment with fan blowing out the kitchen window, with kitchen and sink now covered in beans and a bit of chaff... ever such fun

Did a second roast a few minutes ago, first crack was around 3 minutes in with the roast stopped at around the 5 minute mark, bit on the short side but proof will be in the drinking

    Hey Phrosty,
Thats a pretty fast roast. I have modified my popper and am getting an average 14 minutes to second crack.
I currently roast with an ambiant temp of around 14 degrees though.

True as Redzone says, I didnt hit SecondCrack on my first roast, being over cautious.

    Have fun!!

    Hey everyone,
Thanks for the kind and encouraging words :)

Have been trying this out each day post roast (even tried it 12 hours later, too early I know but couldnt resist)

At 12 hours it was *really* flat and I was worried id botched the roast, its improved noticeably each day and I could even make out caramel from the grounds when I tried some today (3 days after), couldnt taste caramel in the cup but I think thats my palate...

All in all well worth the fun, chaff covered kitchen and 30 minutes of time to do 2 batches

Would upping the roast size increase the roast time? First roast I did about 1/3 cup, next one I did 1/4 cup since there were several escapees on the first roast

Would 1/2 cup be OK or possibly pushing it a bit?

My experience says that upping the roast size decreses the roast time.

You should start weighing your roasts, before & after.
I have recently successfully roasted 2x 125gm (green weight) batch.
But my popper is modified. It has a chimny which extends the barrel an extra 4 inches or so.
Beans still want to jump out every now & then.

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
Next on my to buy list is some kitchen scales (ive got away with none for a year)

On a side note days 5 of these beans yields ver nice citrus flavours, it seems to be the only flavour I pick up easily on

Might need stronger fans to dry and draw the roast out a bit
