popper modifictaions, your thoughts on my mods

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Picked up a crazy popper at vinnies for $8
grabbed some E Yigg beans off B-bay :)

doing some early mods for fun, but might run a few without "mods" to look and learn a little about FC/SC

mods are mainly for chaff collection at this stage and to extend the timeframes. (and i was bored)

    will they work?

Q1 will i hear FC / SC without the chimney?
Q2 will "Pyrex" survive as a lid?
Q3 the can i cut up may be plastic lined (white) will this burn off and kill me? (the square bit)

here are the pics, i am going to look for a temp glass lid

was going to punch some small holes in end can for the filter effect

    fired it up
made a quick change to chaff collector, collected 70- 80% of chaff i reckon

took the "lid" of when FC started, maybe 3 mins...?

they taste OK (nice), not burnt in the mouth when i crunch a few
seems to be a bit of chaff in the "crack" of some is that normal?
maybe stopped to early, thought i heard maybe SC start so i turned it off and dumped em out
few i might pull out and discard (light looking ones?)

I had a laugh now to wait a few days or grind em up?

    Gday Maheel,
Looks like that robot out of lost in space!, if only it could tell you when second crack is.......warning warning second crack approaching!, looks good mate, what sort of roast times are you looking at?, Consider using a batch to sacrifice, take it right through to almost charcoal, so you can correctly identify the first signs of SC, then Rolling SC, some ppl dont like the idea of wasting beans, but its only 100g or so, it sure helped me to identify all the barriers you pass through on you way to the perfect popper roast!
best of luck with the chaff collection idea! now just to get rid of the smoke! :-?

smoke !!! yep the bathroom stinks of coffee smoke I had a laugh

i live in a high rise with a built in "vent" like you see in the hotels
so i grabbed the vacume hose, rigged a bit of cardboard over the end
bolted it to the vent with some weather seal
and sucked that smoke right from the top of the popper

I had a laugh worked well mostly *::) :P bit at the end stank up the bathroom....

time to move to the carpark

as for roast i reckon they are about CS 11 or 12 (last one on the card)
    they smell great !!

    Hi Maheel andCSrs,

Some vac cleaners have a blow hole as well as a suck hole.

If yours does, with 2 hose you could blow directly out a vent/window etc.

Much more comfortable roasting while taking a hot bath but dont drop the popper into water.

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
got about 2 "drinkable shots" from this small 1st batch so far, now the word drinkable is used loosely as i am now sure they were roasted to far and the taste was what i describe as burntish. they smell good and when crunched with your teeth taste good. but not so good in the cup as espresso, in milk i think they would be OK, strong but ok

the other shots i have choked as i ground them to fine, might have 2 shots left in the bag and will try again tomorrow. licking the group handle spouts is not advised as a taste test method

only about 30 more days till i get my new coffee fueled workshop, *:D moving house !!!! no more worries about smoke, noise, and cleaning up "that mess"
