    Crazy Popper first roast...

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Been here the proverbial "5 mins" and I couldnt resist...!!! *I purchased a BeanBay starter pack and confiscated the kids Crazy Popper tonight...

Without paying too much attention to time, I got a positive first crack at around 4 mins and what may or may not have been a 2nd crack at about 6 mins...

    The results are as follows:

    80gm of Ethiopian Gambella -

    Taken with flash...

    Taken without flash...

    Close-up without flash...

Anyone care to hazzard an objective response or impart some knowledge as to how it went...??? :-?

    Hi Bluey,

By now your curiosity should have compelled you to be able to report on how it tasted,,,,, so?
I think you may have picked the most challenging bean to roast evenly,
the EG is renowned for its variability. Im not experienced enough to give you an opinion as to whether too variable or not but, if your happy with the taste Id be happy to help you drink it until an authoritative source shows up.
When I was poppering about 4 min would see 1st crack, then maybe about 7min for 2nd crack, was never 100% sure about second,
also poppers can be quite variable, and are subject to environmental vagaries. Lately I am fiddling with a couple of poppers to mod for coffee roasting, but the roasting hasnt happened yet.
On poppers my thought is to add beans to a warm and running popper and immediately insure the beans are circulating (a bamboo chopstick may help).
If you need to be your own critic read Cupping Room EG thread for some perspective.
    Good luck
    Lindsay

    Hi Lindsay,

I have now roasted all 4 varieties in the starter pack - Ethiopian, Malawi, Brazil Pulped and Uganda Busamaga...

At this point Im still limited to the Saeco semi-auto machine at home until I sort a single group unit and a dedicated grinder - also thinking about acquiring a syphon for some of these single origin beans...

    Roasting observations:

Ethiopian - uneven roast, nice crema, subtle flavour

Malawi - even roast, nice crema, full bodied flavour

Brazil - uneven roast, little crema but full bodied flavour

Uganda - very even roast, rich dark crema, bitter flavour

First 3 very drinkable as a short black, all 4 very drinkable as a latte...

Using a popper is an inexact science with little one can do in varying the heat etc - so I gave up timing, listened for the FC & SC and continued to roast by colour...

Ive seen the threads TG but for the time being, this one has to also function as a popcorn popper - if I decide to keep going Ill likely buy another and modify it...
