    Uneven bean colour

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi, yesterday I roasted 500gms of Ethiopian Gambella Naturals and a small percentage of the beans (5%??) are a much lighter colour. Is this a agitation issue perhaps? I have only done two roasts prior both of the Malawi AAs and at 250gms each with no issues, colour being very uniform. :-[

    Steve

PS. Roaster is a Panasonic BM with a Bosch electronic HG. No photos taken :-[

You will find that some beans will do this, some more than others, the experts will be able to tell you why, but youll find that its more than likley the bean itself not your roasting, i have found this with the gambella too aswell, and i tend to pick out the really pale ones, dont worry, it still tastes great in the cup!

Definitely Gambella and most if not all Ethiopians have this characteristic. I tend not to pick out the lighter ones.

For a personal preference exercise, try a shot or two with and then without the lighter beans and see if you detect any difference.

Ah, thanks guys for the prompt reply, will leave the lighter beans in mix. *I was a bit concerned that the Correttos limit had been breached, glad that is not the case.

    Cheers, Steve. *

    Hey WSully,

I did what you suggested back in this thread. Except cupped rather than espressoed!

Interestingly, this was with a batch of Gambella - so its nothing to worry about, Mono.

The paler beans - I called them quakers, but Im not sure if thats the right term - tasted funkier and had some blueberry notes like Harar.

I decided to leave them in after that!

    Cheers
    Stuart.
