    2nd attempt roasting

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
And so after reading loads on here about home roasting i couldnt resist having a go myself.

    Purchased heat gun
Got wife approval to use the bread maker
    Brought fresh beans..
Found out that breadmaker needs mod so have roped in a mate to help with that (had to promise free roasted coffee for a while - seemed *fair)
ran out of patience waiting for the breadmaker mod (this weekend) so I grabbed my popcorn maker (again with spousal approval) and had a go.

First attempt was somewhat average - very dark.. *got to SC at around 6 minutes (1250 watt popcorn machine).

So tonite after reading about ambient temperature etc I waited until dusk and had another go. *7m53s to SC and beans nowhere as dark. *seems ok. * *Roast cooled and in degausing bags until saturday.

Should have my unpressurised filters for my machine as well.. * here comes a 5 coffee saturday and a grumpy wife with my not being able to get to sleep cos of the caffiene... * ah well.. *such is life.

Thanks all for the information and motivation to just give it a go.. *Amazing community.

Couldnt wait any longer - made a coffee for wife and myself at lunchtime today.

Tasted a little green hard to explain but it just felt like it needed a little more time roasting. Was also fairly bitter.

The first roast was burnt badly and i over corrected with this roast - hopefullly tonights effort will get closer to a reasonable taste.

    Next roast scheduled for tonight.

if you have a SSsteel mixing bowl you can just hold the heat gun while stirring beans with wooden spoon in the bowl. then cool and drink.

300g is easily done this way and IMO way more control than a popper.
expect 15 *min (ish) roast if tried, and you can ramp to 1st crack then slow the roast by holding HG away a bit.....

before my BM i used this, asn if you can do a quick "holder" for the HG you can really "control" it.

    have fun :)

Not waiting is fine. I always suggest trying it early but leaving some to try over the next few days to see it improve.

Some of the grassy/green flavours might lessen in a couple of days but it does sound like you are right, too dark, too light and the next should be goldilocks just right.

Its all part of the home roasting journey, finding what works best for you!

    Re: 2nd attempt roasting

and so my BM works without the need for mods.

Initially does a 5 min warm up where it stirs for 30 seconds and pauses for 3 seconds and repeats. * once we get to 5 mins it will stir constantly for 15 minutes.

so I started the roast at 3 mins in - first crack at 11:53 and then pulled heat away and got 2nd crack at ~17 mins.. * seems ok - they smell good. *

Sealed in DG bag and we wait again... * So I have gotten throught my 1st kilo of beans *- will call it the research phase. * threw out the first half kilo due to bad taste - they are getting better each time..

    Pic of my 1st BM/HG result :0)

Having a bucket load o fun with this.

Great looking roast and nice 1st/2nd crack timings. Should be pretty close to the mark.

    Re: 2nd attempt roasting

    Hey Andrew,

Great times for a 2nd roast! Nailed it.

What beans are these? My guess is PNG or Sumatran based on the wide cleft they have ... only thing is, neither of these beans are usually prone to uneven roast colour, and yours look to be a little uneven (not a bad thing - probably wont affect taste too much - but it good to aim for a nice even colour).

I suspect youll want to wait until the BM has started spinning constantly before starting the roast. The early stages of the roast are very important in terms of drying out the beans evenly so that the latter stages of the roast progress evenly.

Of course, that only gives you 15 mins to do the roast, but try one like that and see how you go. Maybe aim for first crack around 9mins, second crack just as the BM finishes?

    Cheers
    Stuart.

    Hi Stuart

Beans are Guatemala SHB - from a local roaster.

Ill try your suggestion re the shortened roast next.

Next beans on the try list are the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe - they seem to be held in high regard here.

    Re: 2nd attempt roasting

so we are starting to get there - finally able to make some drinkable coffee from the home roasts.

next few weeks should see some improvements - i have an unpressurised filter for my machine on the way as well as a pullman tamper.

hangin out for them to arrive..

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
Just had my bread maker modified. bypassed the circuitry and now have a convenient off/on toggle switch on the side.

No longer have a 15 min time constraint.. Lookin forward to seeing the difference in my roasts not having to rush to second crack before the machine stops.
